Amazon rolled out Health AI on Wednesday, a new artificial intelligence healthcare assistant for One Medical members. The tool marks the company’s latest push into the healthcare sector.
Health AI uses large language models from Amazon’s Bedrock service. The assistant answers health questions and provides personalized advice.
The system pulls information from patients’ medical records, lab results, and current medications. It references licensed data, proprietary information, and knowledge verified by medical experts.
One Medical members access Health AI through the mobile app. The tool can help manage medications and schedule appointments with providers.
Amazon acquired One Medical for $3.9 billion in 2023. The primary care chain operates brick-and-mortar clinics across the country.
Members pay between $99 and $199 per year for services. One Medical offers both in-person visits and telehealth options.
How Health AI Works
Amazon tested Health AI with select One Medical members last spring. The company expanded access to all members this week.
The tool doesn’t add conversations to patient medical records. Amazon designed the system with clinical protocols that identify when symptoms need escalation.
Health AI knows when to direct users to see a provider in person. The company built guardrails into the system for serious conditions.
Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, said the tool differs from competitors. “One Medical’s Health AI assistant knows your health story, can take actions based on a patient’s request, and keeps your trusted providers in the lead,” he told CNBC.
Patients don’t need to upload documents or connect outside apps. The system already has access to their One Medical health information.
Competition in AI Healthcare
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health earlier in January. The feature lets users upload medical records for personalized advice.
Anthropic released Claude for Healthcare shortly after OpenAI’s announcement. Both companies are competing in the healthcare AI space.
Amazon claims Health AI offers more actionable advice than general health chatbots. The tool can directly book appointments and manage prescriptions within the One Medical system.
The company may direct users to Amazon Pharmacy services when helpful. Amazon bought online pharmacy PillPack for roughly $750 million in 2018.
Amazon launched its own pharmacy service in 2020. The company stated it won’t use protected health information to market general merchandise from its main retail store.
Amazon has expanded its healthcare presence over the past decade. The One Medical acquisition added primary care to its existing pharmacy operations.
Wall Street analysts maintain a Strong Buy rating on AMZN stock. The consensus price target of $294.93 represents 27.34% upside based on 46 Buy and one Hold recommendation.
