US-based AI firm Anthropic has identified what it describes as the first major cyber espionage campaign carried out largely by artificial intelligence.
The attack, detected in September 2025, involved a Chinese state-sponsored group exploiting Anthropic’s Claude Code tool to infiltrate approximately 30 global organizations. Targets included technology companies, financial institutions, manufacturers, and government agencies.
According to Anthropic, AI performed the bulk of the operation, handling between 80% and 90% of the tasks, while human operators intervened only at critical stages. The company emphasized that this marks a significant escalation in cybersecurity risks posed by autonomous AI systems.
Attackers Exploit AI Capabilities
Investigators reported that the attackers cleverly bypassed security guardrails by breaking down tasks into smaller segments and concealing the AI’s objectives.
This allowed the system to conduct reconnaissance, identify vulnerabilities, and extract sensitive information without triggering conventional alerts.
“AI’s ability to execute complex campaigns with minimal oversight demonstrates a shift in threat dynamics,” Anthropic noted in its report.
Experts say this illustrates how state actors could leverage AI to scale espionage operations far more efficiently than traditional human-led approaches.

In response to the breach, Anthropic has expanded its detection tools and notified all affected parties. The company stressed the importance of implementing industry-wide safeguards to mitigate the risks posed by AI-driven attacks.
