Apple Updates MacBook Air With M5 Chip and Higher Base Storage
Apple launched a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Air featuring its latest M5 processor. The model starts at $1,099 and now includes 512GB of storage as standard. Previously, customers paid $1,199 to access the same storage capacity.
The company effectively reduced pricing at the 512GB tier while preserving the entry price. This move follows higher memory costs that have pressured laptop manufacturers. Apple adjusted configurations instead of raising advertised prices.
Apple began transitioning from Intel processors to in-house M-series chips in 2020. Since then, it has highlighted improvements in performance and battery life. The shift helped the company differentiate its products from Windows-based competitors.
Apple Expands MacBook Pro Lineup With M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple also introduced updated 14-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The M5 Pro version starts at $2,199 and now includes 1TB of storage. Earlier base models often shipped with 512GB.

Apple Highlights Performance Gains and AI Capabilities
Apple designed the M5 Pro and M5 Max around its Fusion Architecture. The design merges two dies into a single system on a chip. The chip integrates CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, Media Engine, and Thunderbolt 5 support.
Both chips feature an 18-core CPU configuration. This marks an upgrade from the 14-core M4 Pro and 16-core M4 Max. The CPU includes six high-performance cores and 12 performance cores.
Apple states that CPU performance improves by up to 30% for professional workloads. The GPU scales up to 40 cores in higher configurations. Graphics performance increases by up to 20%, while ray tracing improves up to 35%.
The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with 307GB/s bandwidth. The M5 Max supports up to 128GB with 614GB/s bandwidth. Apple reports over four times peak GPU compute for AI tasks versus the prior generation.
