Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) ended trading at $259.88, gaining 0.94% after a late push toward $260. The company also delayed its upcoming smart home display as development issues continue with the upgraded Siri platform. The postponement shifts the expected launch window to September while engineers complete the assistant’s new features.
Apple Delays Smart Home Display Release
Apple planned to introduce a smart home display during spring 2025 to expand its connected device ecosystem. However, development delays forced several schedule changes across the product timeline. Consequently, the company now aims to unveil the device in September after additional software progress.
The device carries the internal name J490 and serves as a central hub for Apple’s smart home environment. It will allow users to control connected appliances, media, and household automation from one interface. The product plays a key role in Apple’s broader home technology strategy.
Reports from Bloomberg News indicate that Apple already finished most hardware work months earlier. Yet the company continues to hold the product because the supporting software remains incomplete. As a result, executives delayed the launch until the updated assistant reaches stable performance.
Siri Upgrade Slows Product Timeline
Apple designed the device around a major upgrade to Siri powered by its Apple Intelligence initiative. Engineers aim to improve voice understanding, contextual awareness, and task automation across Apple devices. However, the development effort has progressed slower than expected, which forced repeated postponements.
The company initially targeted March 2026 as the next launch window after the earlier spring 2025 delay. Still, internal testing revealed additional software problems that prevented a stable release. Therefore, Apple shifted the unveiling to September while development teams continue refining the assistant.
Technology journalist Mark Gurman reported that software readiness remains the main obstacle for the smart home display. According to people familiar with internal plans, the hardware itself already reached completion. Consequently, Apple waits for the voice assistant upgrade before introducing the device publicly.
Hardware Ready as Apple Plans Future Smart Home Hub
Apple designed the smart display as a compact device resembling a small tablet attached to a speaker base. The unit will feature a seven-inch screen and a square interface layout for applications. Additionally, the interface design resembles the circular icon grid used on the Apple Watch.
The device will also support facial recognition to identify household members automatically. After recognition, the system can display personalized information such as calendars, reminders, and music selections. Furthermore, the display may mount on a wall or attach to a speaker base through a magnetic system.
Apple intends to power the device through a single USB-C connection and enclose it in aluminum housing. Meanwhile, the company also studies a future model with a nine-inch screen attached to a robotic arm. That advanced version could appear in 2027 as Apple expands its smart home product lineup.
