BMW has officially pulled back the curtain on its all-electric i3 sedan Wednesday, representing the second vehicle built on the automaker’s revolutionary Neue Klasse architecture.

The announcement clearly positions the i3 as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model 3 range, with BMW making its intentions unmistakably clear.
Available exclusively as the 50 xDrive variant at launch, the sedan features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration generating 469 horsepower. While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance edges ahead with 510 horsepower, BMW compensates with impressive efficiency credentials.
The German automaker projects 900 km of range under the European WLTP testing protocol, equating to approximately 440 miles when converted to EPA standards. This substantially surpasses the Tesla Model 3 Performance’s 309-mile EPA rating and even exceeds the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile capability.
Fast-charging capabilities allow the i3 to recover approximately 250 miles of range within a 10-minute charging session, powered by 800-volt electrical architecture and sixth-generation eDrive powertrain technology. Acceleration from 0-60 mph is projected at approximately four seconds.
Cabin Design and Tech Features
The interior showcases a completely reimagined cabin centered on a sweeping 40-inch panoramic display spanning the dashboard width. BMW’s refreshed iDrive infotainment operates on the company’s Heart of Joy computing architecture, delivering processing speeds 10 times faster than previous iterations.
Physically, the new i3 surpasses the current 3 Series dimensions — offering increased length, width, and height — while its exterior styling provides a preview of the forthcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series design language.
While official US pricing remains unconfirmed, industry expectations place the i3 near $55,000. This positions it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximately $47,490 starting price, while matching the Model 3 Performance’s $54,990 entry point.
Manufacturing Schedule and American Launch
Production operations will commence at BMW’s Munich manufacturing facility in August 2026. While European customers can expect deliveries beginning fall 2026, American consumers face an extended wait — US deliveries won’t begin until 2027.
BMW has confirmed additional variants are in development, including a high-performance all-electric M3. The i3 sedan and iX3 SUV spearhead an extensive Neue Klasse expansion encompassing four additional forthcoming models.
The automaker characterizes the Neue Klasse initiative as the largest financial commitment in company history.
Wall Street analysts currently maintain a Hold rating consensus on BAMXF stock, comprising five Buy ratings, five Hold ratings, and three Sell ratings issued within the past three months.
