Google’s Gemini chatbot is gaining ground on market leader ChatGPT, according to new data from research firm Sensor Tower reported by The Information. The findings show Google making substantial progress in the competitive AI chatbot market.
Gemini expanded its monthly active user base by approximately 30% between August and November, reaching 346 million users. During the same period, ChatGPT’s monthly active users grew about 5% to 810 million. The data reveals a clear shift in growth momentum between the two platforms.
Website traffic patterns reflect similar trends. Gemini’s global website visits doubled from August to November. ChatGPT’s website traffic increased just 1% during the same timeframe.
Google released Gemini 3.0 in mid-November, its most advanced AI model version. The release led to increased mobile app downloads for Gemini. Industry observers have praised the model, with some judging it superior to competing AI systems.
The competitive pressure has prompted action from OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman declared an internal “code red” last week, according to multiple media reports. The declaration signals OpenAI’s recognition of the changing competitive landscape.
OpenAI Responds to Competition
OpenAI plans to release its next AI model, GPT 5.2, on December 9. The company moved up its planned release date in response to market conditions. The startup intends to prioritize improving ChatGPT’s performance and security while putting other initiatives on hold.
Despite Gemini’s growth, ChatGPT maintains the market lead. The platform has nearly 900 million weekly active users. ChatGPT’s top five markets by weekly active users are the United States, India, Brazil, Japan and France.
Usage Patterns Differ Between Platforms
User engagement metrics show different patterns between the two platforms. ChatGPT users spent approximately 17 minutes daily in the app last month, up 6% from March. These users average eight daily sessions with the platform.
Gemini users averaged about 11 minutes daily, up 120% from March. They conduct an average of six sessions per day. These figures don’t include voice assistant interactions on Android phones.
Google’s AI reach extends beyond the Gemini app alone. CEO Sundar Pichai stated in July that over 2 billion people view Google’s AI-generated search answers monthly. In November, Google reported that the Gemini app has more than 650 million monthly active users.
Google Search’s AI Mode has over 75 million daily active users globally. This represents Google’s broader integration of AI across its product ecosystem. The company’s total AI user base across all products exceeds Gemini’s standalone numbers.
