Anthropic has unveiled a groundbreaking capability allowing its Claude AI assistant to remotely operate users’ computers for task completion. The company announced this feature on Monday, making it immediately accessible to Claude Pro and Claude Max tier subscribers.
Currently exclusive to MacOS devices, the functionality enables users to issue commands from their mobile devices while Claude executes operations on their desktop machines — launching applications, conducting web searches, populating data in spreadsheets, or organizing files.
In a demonstration video, Anthropic illustrated a scenario where someone running behind schedule for a meeting instructed Claude to convert a presentation deck into PDF format and append it to a calendar appointment. Claude accomplished this entirely autonomously.
The system interfaces with platforms such as Google Calendar and Slack via pre-built integrations. When native connectors aren’t present, Claude resorts to simulating keyboard and mouse interactions to accomplish requested tasks.
Claude requests authorization before accessing any new application for the first time. Users retain the ability to terminate any ongoing task at their discretion.
Integration With Dispatch Functionality
This computer control capability complements Dispatch, a feature Anthropic introduced the previous week within Claude Cowork. Dispatch facilitates persistent conversations with Claude across multiple devices and enables delegation of recurring responsibilities.
When combined, these two features can autonomously handle responsibilities such as delivering morning summaries, executing code validation, or monitoring email correspondence.
Anthropic acknowledges that intricate tasks might require multiple attempts to complete successfully. The organization characterizes this release as an experimental preview designed to collect user insights and determine priority areas for enhancement.
Privacy Considerations and Precautions
Anthropic has implemented protective measures to minimize vulnerabilities, including automated detection of prompt injection exploits. Nevertheless, the company advises users against deploying the feature with applications containing confidential information — certain such applications are restricted by default configuration.
Cybersecurity professionals have raised broader apprehensions regarding autonomous AI systems. These technologies can execute substantial actions rapidly and with minimal oversight. Additional risks include malicious exploitation of the agent to compromise private documents or infrastructure.
Anthropic has committed to continuously enhancing its security protocols as emerging threats are identified.
This development positions Anthropic in heightened competition with OpenClaw, an open-source alternative that gained widespread attention earlier this year. OpenClaw permits task submission through WhatsApp or Telegram for local device execution. Nvidia recently introduced NemoClaw, an enterprise-focused variant of the platform.
OpenAI entered this domain last month by recruiting Peter Steinberger, OpenClaw’s originator, to develop personal AI agent solutions.
Presently, Claude’s computer control functionality remains in experimental preview status on MacOS for Pro and Max subscription tiers.
