Claude Introduces Memory Access and History Migration Features Amid Explosive User Growth Following Government Standoff
In a strategic move coinciding with massive user adoption, Anthropic has made its memory capability available to everyone using Claude for free, eliminating the previous paywall that limited this functionality to premium subscribers.
This feature enables Claude to retain information from previous interactions, providing continuity across conversations. Competitor ChatGPT had already offered comparable functionality to its free user base.
Anthropic simultaneously introduced a migration tool designed specifically for users transitioning from competing AI platforms. The feature supports importing conversation archives from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot through a straightforward copy-and-paste workflow.
The migration process requires users to request their existing chatbot export its data in code block format. This exported information is then pasted into Claude’s Memory settings section, where users select “Add to memory” to initiate the transfer.
Processing imported data can require up to one full day. Once complete, users have full transparency into what information Claude has retained and can modify or delete any details as desired.
Currently, ChatGPT lacks an equivalent feature for incoming users. Google has confirmed development of a similar tool, though no launch date has been announced.
These feature rollouts arrive on the heels of a significant confrontation between Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense. The AI company declined to permit its technology for mass domestic surveillance operations or fully autonomous weapon systems.
The Trump administration retaliated by directing all federal departments to cease Claude usage. Defense officials additionally designated Anthropic as a supply-chain security concern.
Claude Reaches App Store Summit Following Pentagon Confrontation
The controversy appears to have paradoxically boosted Claude’s popularity. The application surged to the top position on Apple’s App Store free app rankings, displacing ChatGPT from the lead.
The free user base has expanded by more than 60% since the beginning of January. New account registrations have increased fourfold during this timeframe.
This dramatic influx overwhelmed Claude’s infrastructure Monday, resulting in several hours of downtime. Anthropic acknowledged the outage stemmed from “unprecedented demand” and restored full service by late morning Eastern time.
Concurrently, OpenAI revealed intentions to integrate its AI systems into the Defense Department’s secure classified infrastructure. The announcement prompted some ChatGPT users to advocate for boycotting the platform.
Memory Import Process Explained
To utilize the import feature, users navigate to Claude’s settings interface and locate the Capabilities menu. Within this section, they access Memory and select “Start import.”
After inserting the code block exported from their previous AI assistant, Claude begins analyzing and incorporating the data. Users can review imported information by selecting “See what Claude learned about you.”
Anthropic has verified the import tool functions with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The feature is immediately available to all Claude users without restrictions.
