TLDRs;
- DoorDash launches fuel relief program to support drivers facing rising gas costs
- Weekly payments available for Dashers driving at least 125 miles per week
- Crimson debit card users earn extra cash back on fuel purchases
- Rising gas prices reduce gig worker profits and threaten sustainability
As gas prices continue their upward trajectory due to the ongoing Iran-U.S. conflict, DoorDash (DASH) has announced a new program designed to provide relief for its delivery drivers across the U.S. and Canada. The initiative aims to offset some of the financial strain caused by surging fuel costs, which have reached an average of $3.96 per gallon nationwide, according to recent AAA data. In certain regions, prices have even climbed to around $4 per gallon.
Unlike traditional employees, gig workers bear the full cost of operating their vehicles, including fuel, maintenance, and insurance. For Dashers, who rely heavily on personal vehicles for income, these costs can quickly erode earnings. A May 2025 Human Rights Watch study highlighted that gig workers in Texas spent roughly $100 per week on fuel, making gasoline one of the largest expenses in their work. With prices now climbing significantly higher, drivers are facing mounting challenges.
Weekly Payments Target High-Mileage Drivers
The DoorDash relief program, set to run through April 26, offers weekly payments to drivers who meet the mileage threshold of at least 125 miles per week. Payments start at $5, translating into potential savings of $1 to $1.50 per gallon of gasoline. The initiative is particularly meaningful for drivers operating in suburban and rural areas, where distances between deliveries are longer and fuel costs are more burdensome.
“This program is designed to help Dashers keep more of what they earn, even as fuel prices rise,” a DoorDash spokesperson said.
By providing structured support, DoorDash aims to ensure its drivers can maintain their earnings without having to drastically reduce hours or leave the platform entirely.
Cash Back Incentives for Card Users
Drivers using DoorDash’s Crimson debit card will gain extra financial relief, receiving a 10% cash back on fuel purchases. This translates to potential savings of up to $1.90 per gallon, further cushioning the impact of rising prices. Combined with the weekly payments, these measures give Dashers tangible support during a period of economic uncertainty and elevated operational costs.
The program mirrors a similar effort by DoorDash in 2022 when gas prices spiked following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At that time, other delivery platforms, including Uber and Grubhub, also implemented temporary measures, such as fuel surcharges and pay increases, to help drivers cope with soaring fuel expenses.
The Gig Economy Feels the Strain
Despite the support, the broader challenge for gig workers remains: rising operational costs are outpacing earnings, and fluctuating delivery demand makes offsetting these costs difficult. As a result, some drivers are earning less per delivery, even while maintaining longer working hours. The financial pressure could push many to scale back their hours or exit the industry altogether, highlighting the fragile balance of the gig economy in times of economic stress.
DoorDash’s latest relief initiative signals the company’s recognition of this challenge, but it remains to be seen whether other platforms will follow suit this time. For investors, the move could provide short-term goodwill toward the company, potentially reflecting in DASH stock sentiment as markets react to efforts supporting its workforce amid turbulent macroeconomic conditions.
