I had very high hopes for these - I preordered them and Ace Combat 7. I was a fan of AC:6 on the Xbox 360, and I had bought the Hori Ace Edge flight sticks for that game as well. The Ace Edge HOTAS for the Xbox 360 was a quality item and they worked very well - which makes sense, because as I understand it, they were basically just a retooled version of the Saitek X-45 HOTAS, which too, was a quality item. I thought if they were anywhere near as good, why wouldn't I buy these at $200 - and support the small niche community that has been begging for a HOTAS on the Xbox One since it came out (and flight games to use with it.). So I'll be comparing these heavily to the old ones.
I am incredibly disappointed with these new Hori HOTAS. I am fairly certain that Saitek was in no way involved with the design or manufacture of them unlike the old ones. In fact, I'm fairly certain that they simply made a mold of the old throttle to get the overall shape the same - and them made the electronics in house, using the absolute cheapest and awful components they could source; in order to save the maximum amount of money possible and milk as much money as possible from those us of excited to see their return and pre-order them. Jokes on them because I've returned them, and bought the Thrustmaster HOTAS instead, which are far better quality and less than half the price.
First - the deal breaker - the joystick has an incredible amount of slop / play around the center - easily 5 degrees in all directions before any tension occurs. It feels broken and wobbly, right out of the box. On top of this, there is a tremendous "dead zone" in the center of the stick, where your control inputs do nothing, making precision impossible. Yes, there is a "sensitivity" adjustment, and yes, the dead zone is a bit better at the extreme of the adjustment, however, this means you have to move the stick all the way to the edge of travel, in order to register movement, which is also inaccurate, tiring, and just not realistic feeling at all. The throw of the joystick is long as well, which means your joystick is all over the place while you fly. It is just simply not usable - you're better off using your normal xbox controller over these. And that's the deal breaker and the main reason I returned them - that constant feeling of - I'd be doing better if I just used a controller instead. The old 360 HOTAS had almost no slop and felt very tight, and had very little deadzone. They were better than using a controller, as a true HOTAS should be
There is no "middle detent" for 50% throttle (the Thrustmaster has this!). Even the 360 version at least had an "afterburner detent". Gone is the rubberized coating of the 360 version, replaced instead with a cheap feeling, smooth / slippery plastic finish (yes there is some texturing in spots but not nearly enough). No more rubber pad on the base of the throttle either. Gone too is the weighted bases of the 360 version, with their nice aluminum covers. They even put fake plastic allen screws on the tops of the new ones to try an make them look more like the old metal ones! The new sticks are all plastic, and the bases have suction cups which you must use due to how light they are. For some reason they kept the fake knobs and buttons on the throttle that the 360 sticks had! The standard 15 pin joystick connector for the throttle has been replaced with a RJ-12 connector (6 pin telephone connector) - far less durable (and cheaper).
The dpad on the joystick rattles around and is imprecise. In fact all of the buttons feel cheap and rattly and microswitches, not spring loaded or silicone sprung like a gamepad button would be. The labeling on the buttons is small and hard to see. The xbox guide button is very bright - obnoxious when playing in a dark room. There is a decent mini thumbstick on the joystick, but ace combat doesn't use it as a HAT switch for looking around, making it basically useless. The joystick does NOT twist for rudder (the Thrustmaster version does!) - which makes you rely on the rudder rocker on the throttle, which is often awkward to use as it's in a weird spot for your fingers(the 360 one was this way too - they kept the worst features of the 360 version!).
All in all, these joysticks feel like they are worth maybe $50 at best and only for games requiring no precision at all. Like a kids first flight stick. I get this is a game console not a computer, but we still expect accurate controls! This is inexcusably bad.
Look past these. Don't even buy them used, they'll just frustrate you. Go buy the Thrustmaster version instead and be much happier!
On the bright side, Port 213 honored my refund (after some delay), so I'm happier with the seller than the product itself.
If your looking for a great experience and have a pc or a laptop and if you have the cash I recommend buying x52 rhino and a dongle... you program with pc while dingle is inserted and presto ... perfection...
If your a tad lacking on funds but you just gotta have that hotas experience I highly recommend the thrustmaster tflight for Xbox 1 there are 2 models and both are excellent despite being made of plastic they are built for function and last well over a year ... i have had mine for 2 years now and I love it

Haptik:
