TLDRs:
- Google rolls out Gemini AI in Chrome for India, supporting multiple regional languages.
- Sidebar feature enables users to summarize content, manage Gmail, and schedule tasks.
- Gemini can compare multiple tabs and interact with YouTube, Drive, and Maps.
- Google expands Nano Banana 2 AI tool for image transformations in Chrome.
Shares of Google (GOOGL) ticked higher Wednesday following the announcement that the company is launching its Gemini AI integration for Chrome across India.
The new feature allows desktop users to access Gemini through a sidebar, providing contextual answers based on the content of any open tab. Users can interact with Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, Calendar, and Maps without leaving the browser window.
The rollout also includes support for a wide range of Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, alongside English. This expansion represents a significant step in Google’s efforts to bring advanced AI capabilities to a broader, multilingual audience.
Ask Gemini Anywhere
The sidebar introduces an “Ask Gemini” icon that users can activate on any tab. This feature lets users ask questions, summarize web content, or even generate quizzes to understand topics better. Gemini’s cross-tab functionality means it can analyze information from multiple tabs simultaneously, which is particularly useful for comparing shopping options, travel tickets, or other research tasks.
Gemini also offers personalized assistance by connecting to different Google apps. Users can compose emails, schedule meetings, summarize YouTube videos with timestamps, and even get day briefings directly through the sidebar.
Nano Banana 2 Enhances Creativity
Alongside Gemini, Google is integrating its Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool into Chrome. Users can upload images, such as a photo of a room while shopping for furniture, and ask the AI to visualize changes or transformations. This feature adds a creative dimension to the browser, enabling users to experiment with image edits and transformations without needing separate software.
The inclusion of Nano Banana 2 highlights Google’s commitment to combining productivity tools with generative AI, offering both functional and creative solutions within a single interface.
Mobile Support and Regional Limitations
In addition to desktop support, Google confirmed that Gemini will also be available in Chrome for iOS in India. Users will access the AI assistant through a page tools icon in the address bar. However, certain advanced agentic capabilities that allow the AI to autonomously manage tasks are currently restricted to U.S.-based AI Pro and AI Ultra users, meaning these features are not yet available in India, Canada, or New Zealand.
Despite this limitation, the rollout represents a major milestone in Google’s AI strategy, making sophisticated assistant capabilities accessible to millions of users in India while bolstering engagement across its ecosystem.
