Google reported a notable drop in malicious and policy-violating apps on its Play Store in 2025, signaling the growing effectiveness of its AI-powered security measures. The company blocked 1.8 million apps that failed to meet its policies, a decline from over 2.3 million in both 2023 and 2024.
This reduction points to the tech giant’s strategic shift toward leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning in app review processes. By integrating generative AI models and performing more than 10,000 safety checks per app, Google has strengthened its defenses against potentially harmful applications.

Developer Account Bans Decline
Alongside blocking apps, Google banned over 80,000 developer accounts in 2025. While still a significant number, it represents a decline compared with previous years, suggesting that fewer developers are repeatedly violating platform policies.

Mobile banking trojans, in particular, rose nearly fourfold in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Experts warn that as platform security tightens, user behavior becomes a critical factor in overall protection. A survey found iPhone users, perceiving their devices as safer, are more prone to scams than Android users, highlighting a paradox, stronger built-in defenses can sometimes foster riskier habits.
