TLDR
- OpenAI released GPT-5.2 on Thursday, calling it its most advanced AI model for professional use
- The model improves on creating spreadsheets, building presentations, image perception, coding, and understanding long context
- GPT-5.2 is available in three versions: Instant for speed, Thinking for structured work, and Pro for difficult questions
- The release comes weeks after GPT-5.1 and follows a “code red” declaration at OpenAI to improve ChatGPT
- The model is available through ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API starting Thursday
OpenAI announced GPT-5.2 on Thursday, its most advanced artificial intelligence model. The company said the new model performs better at professional tasks than previous versions.
GPT-5.2 shows improvements in creating spreadsheets, building presentations, perceiving images, writing code, and understanding long context. The model became available Thursday through OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot and its application programming interface.
The company released GPT-5.2 just weeks after launching GPT-5.1. This quick release follows recent model launches from competitors Anthropic and Google last month.
OpenAI declared a “code red” effort weeks ago to improve ChatGPT and sideline other projects. CEO Sam Altman made this internal declaration as the company faced new pressure from competing AI products.
Fidji Simo serves as CEO of applications at OpenAI. She told reporters the code red helped define company priorities and reallocate resources.
“We announced this code red to really signal to the company that we want to marshal resources in one particular area,” Simo said Thursday. She explained this approach helps define priorities and determine which projects to deprioritize.
The new model comes in three versions. Instant focuses on speed for writing and information seeking tasks.
Thinking performs better at structured work including coding and planning. Pro delivers the most accurate answers for difficult questions.
Model Development Timeline
Simo said the GPT-5.2 integration has been in development for many months. The work began long before the recent code red declaration.
“This particular integration has been in the works for a while,” Simo told reporters. She said the company maintains a fast cadence for releasing new models.
The code red increased resources focused on ChatGPT overall. However, Simo said this resource shift was not the specific reason for this week’s release timing.
Competition Drives Release Pace
OpenAI faces growing competition in the AI model space. Google and Anthropic both launched new models in recent weeks.
The company responded by prioritizing improvements to ChatGPT. This shift involved moving resources away from other projects.
GPT-5.2 represents OpenAI’s answer to competitive pressure in the AI market. The model targets everyday professional users who need help with business tasks.
The API availability allows developers to build applications using GPT-5.2. This extends the model’s reach beyond direct ChatGPT users.
OpenAI said GPT-5.2 is available starting Thursday through both ChatGPT and the company’s API.
