Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Li Auto is set to expand the in-car experience with its upcoming AI-powered smart glasses. CEO Li Xiang announced the product on social media, highlighting the company’s commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into its vehicles.
The smart glasses are designed to work alongside Li Auto’s MindVLA system, introduced earlier this year, which supports assisted driving and a range of vehicle automation features.
Li emphasized that the accessory aims to provide passengers with an interactive and personalized experience. By leveraging spatial, linguistic, and behavioral intelligence, the AI glasses are intended to respond to user behavior, delivering contextual information and assistance during trips.

Regulatory Hurdles Could Affect Usage
Despite the technological promise, regulatory challenges in China may limit the glasses’ functionality. Following a fatal crash involving a Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan in March 2025, the Ministry of Public Security warned that drivers engaging with devices while using assisted-driving features risk both safety and legal repercussions.
This guidance has created uncertainty over whether Li Auto’s AI glasses will be available for driver use or restricted to passengers. Unlike windshield AR navigation solutions from companies such as XPeng and Huawei, which are designed to be accessible to drivers, Li Auto’s product may face stricter limitations, potentially narrowing its immediate market.
Officials have also mandated that automakers avoid exaggerating autonomous driving capabilities, requiring Li Auto to clearly communicate whether its glasses serve drivers or passengers exclusively.
Opportunities in Automotive AR-HUD Market
The launch of AI glasses coincides with a rapidly expanding augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) market in China. AR-HUD technology projects navigation and alert information onto vehicle windshields, enabling drivers to keep their focus on the road.
Installations are projected to exceed one million units in 2025, up from 900,000 in 2024, reflecting a year-over-year growth of 300%.
Leading suppliers, including Foryou Multimedia, E-LEAD, and Huawei, currently control the majority of the AR-HUD market, but the increasing demand for advanced imaging modules, optical engines, and display systems leaves room for new entrants.
For Li Auto, its AI glasses could complement these trends, offering an additional layer of in-car intelligence and interactivity, particularly in mid-market vehicles priced between 150,000 and 200,000 yuan.
