The streaming powerhouse Netflix executed a strategic acquisition this week that merges Hollywood credibility with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology. On Thursday, the company revealed its purchase of InterPositive, an AI-focused filmmaking technology venture co-created by Oscar-winning filmmaker and actor Ben Affleck.
The purchase price has not been made public.
Affleck established InterPositive in 2022. The startup develops artificial intelligence solutions tailored specifically for film production operations.
The underlying technology revolves around an AI system trained to comprehend visual coherence and editorial consistency. It functions within practical filmmaking constraints — addressing challenges such as incomplete scenes, lighting errors, and continuity problems.
“We’ve incorporated safeguards to preserve creative vision, ensuring these tools enable responsible experimentation while maintaining artistic control in the hands of creators,” Affleck explained in an official statement.
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria reinforced this perspective. “Our philosophy is that innovative tools should enhance creative possibilities, not limit them or substitute the contributions of writers, directors, performers, and production teams,” she stated.
Affleck, celebrated for directing the Academy Award-winning film Argo, will transition into a senior advisory role at Netflix.
Netflix’s Latest Strategic Acquisition
This transaction represents Netflix’s initial acquisition following the company’s withdrawal from competitive negotiations to purchase Warner Bros Discovery’s entertainment and streaming portfolio. Those assets were eventually secured by Paramount Skydance with a more attractive proposal.
The purchase indicates Netflix is prioritizing AI-enhanced production capabilities over acquiring conventional content catalogs or traditional studio facilities.
Entertainment Industry’s Evolving AI Perspective
Hollywood’s approach to artificial intelligence has undergone rapid transformation. Until recently, concerns about workforce displacement and copyright protection dominated industry discussions — particularly during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ labor disputes.
Currently, major studios are embracing an alternative approach.
Toward the end of last year, Disney revealed its decision to permit OpenAI access to intellectual property from Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel properties for integration into the company’s Sora AI video generation platform.
Netflix’s InterPositive purchase reflects comparable reasoning — leveraging AI as a production support tool rather than a creative substitute.
InterPositive’s technology incorporates deliberate limitations. The artificial intelligence system is engineered to respect cinematic principles while accommodating the unpredictable nature of on-location filming, ensuring human artists retain ultimate creative authority.
Affleck’s participation extends beyond the transaction. His appointment as senior advisor at Netflix maintains his connection to the technology’s continued evolution within one of the globe’s dominant streaming services.
Netflix stock experienced a 0.17% increase on Thursday.
