OpenAI has announced plans to consolidate its ChatGPT platform, Codex development tool, and browser functionality into one comprehensive desktop application. Company executives are branding this unified offering as a “superapp.” The strategic consolidation aims to streamline the product portfolio and deliver an enhanced user experience.
The initiative received official confirmation from OpenAI on Thursday, coming on the heels of reporting by the Wall Street Journal. This decision represents a significant strategic realignment for the artificial intelligence leader.
Fidji Simo, serving as Chief of Applications, will spearhead sales initiatives for the consolidated platform. Meanwhile, President Greg Brockman will shift from his current role overseeing computing infrastructure to temporarily guide the product transformation and associated organizational restructuring.
According to an internal communication obtained by staff, Simo explained: “We realized we were spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks, and that we need to simplify our efforts.” She emphasized that this scattered approach had created obstacles to progress.
Throughout the previous year, OpenAI introduced numerous independent applications, many developed in partnership with Microsoft. A significant portion of these releases failed to achieve meaningful user adoption and created strategic ambiguity within the organization.
The consolidated superapp will emphasize “agentic AI” capabilities. This refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of operating independently on desktop environments, executing complex tasks such as code generation or data analysis with minimal human oversight.
