TLDR
- OpenAI has shelved its controversial “adult mode” chatbot feature without a timeline for reconsideration
- Safety advisers warned about risks including child protection issues, mental health impacts, and dangerous content combinations
- The feature, initially targeted for Q1 2026, faced both technical obstacles and ethical challenges
- OpenAI discontinued its Sora video generation platform to reallocate resources toward robotics and simulation projects
- Discontinuing Sora resulted in the cancellation of a billion-dollar collaboration with Disney
OpenAI has shelved its controversial plans to introduce sexually explicit conversation capabilities to ChatGPT, with no timeline established for revisiting the decision. The initiative would have permitted adults who passed age verification to engage in NSFW text-based discussions, though restrictions on explicit imagery, audio, and video would have remained.
OpenAI has indefinitely shelved its adult mode for ChatGPT according to the Financial Times.

Initially scheduled for December 2025, the rollout was subsequently delayed to the first quarter of 2026. However, the feature never progressed beyond internal planning stages.
OpenAI framed the proposal as respecting user autonomy rather than creating a full-fledged adult content platform. Under the plan, content moderation rules would have been loosened exclusively for users who completed verification processes.
However, the initiative encountered substantial opposition from within the organization. An internal advisory group strongly objected, citing concerns about users developing unhealthy emotional dependencies on AI systems, exposure to damaging material, and what insiders referred to as “sexy suicide coach” risk scenarios.
The advisory team also highlighted potential vulnerabilities related to protecting minors and maintaining adequate mental health protections. These ethical concerns, combined with unresolved technical challenges and continuing safety assessments, led to the indefinite suspension.
The company has not announced any future plans to revive the project.
OpenAI Also Discontinues Sora App
In a concurrent move, OpenAI revealed it was discontinuing Sora, its artificial intelligence video creation platform. The organization stated it required reallocating computational capacity toward initiatives deemed more strategically important.
These higher-priority initiatives encompass robotics development and world simulation technologies, with emphasis on applications involving tangible physical interactions.
The Sora termination impacts both everyday users of the application and professional creators utilizing API integration. The company advised users to download and preserve their generated content before platform access terminates.
Disney Deal Collapses
Shuttering Sora triggered immediate financial ramifications. A proposed billion-dollar collaboration with Disney was terminated as a direct consequence.
The arrangement had encompassed character licensing agreements and potential investment opportunities between OpenAI and Disney. Neither company has indicated whether negotiations might be revisited in the future.
Under CEO Sam Altman’s leadership, the organization has been navigating a period of strategic realignment. OpenAI is now prioritizing the consolidation of its various technologies into a unified platform, stepping back from expansion into new content categories.
Both the suspension of the adult chatbot initiative and the termination of Sora demonstrate this strategic recalibration. The company seems to be withdrawing from experimental ventures to strengthen its foundational offerings.
Policy discussions regarding content boundaries are nothing new at OpenAI. The organization has modified its approach to adult content multiple times while navigating an increasingly competitive artificial intelligence landscape.
Currently, sexually explicit text interactions remain prohibited for ChatGPT users. OpenAI has made no public statements regarding potential future reconsideration of the adult mode functionality.
The most recent confirmed development is the termination of the Disney arrangement, which was directly linked to the now-defunct Sora platform.
