The app’s rollout covered seven major markets, including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, with no invite requirement in top regions, unlike its earlier iOS release.
The Android version’s open availability marked a sharp contrast to the invite-only iOS launch, which was restricted to the U.S. and Canada and tallied about 110,000 downloads on day one. Revised Appfigures data shows the Android debut was more than four times as successful, signaling both pent-up demand and a growing appetite for AI-driven video tools globally.
Notably, nearly 296,000 downloads, over 60%, came from the U.S. alone, making it the dominant market for Sora’s early adoption. The app currently sits among the top five free apps in the U.S. App Store, holding momentum as AI-generated media continues to trend upward.
AI Video Creation Meets Social Media Design
Sora allows users to generate AI-powered videos with simple text prompts and share them instantly through a TikTok-style feed. One of its most viral features, Cameos, enables users to animate themselves and friends using OpenAI’s generative models, blending entertainment and creativity through deepfake-like personalization.
This blend of social and creative functionality has helped Sora rapidly capture users’ attention, especially among Gen Z creators seeking AI tools that feel familiar yet innovative.
OpenAI’s focus on accessibility and seamless design is positioning Sora as a mainstream-friendly AI app, directly competing with Meta’s expanding AI video ecosystem, which recently reached European markets.
GPU Costs and Monetization Pressure
Behind the surge in downloads lies a growing operational challenge. AI researcher Bill Peebles warned that Sora’s economics may be “unsustainable” in the long run due to the high cost of GPU computation. The app currently offers free daily video generations but limits users to a capped number before charging $4 for 10 additional generations.
Each AI video consumes significant GPU resources, especially as users experiment with longer, higher-resolution clips. As demand climbs, OpenAI may be forced to tighten free limits or push users toward Sora Pro, a premium version with bundled credits and faster rendering. Analysts note that while download spikes drive visibility, conversion to paid tiers will be the ultimate metric determining whether Sora can sustain its growth.
By the fifth day after launch, Sora’s iOS version had already surpassed 1 million total downloads, prompting OpenAI to roll out paid credit packs to offset GPU strain. The company has yet to reveal specific metrics on average revenue per user (ARPU) or unit economics, leaving investors to speculate about the app’s profitability amid ballooning AI infrastructure costs.
Watermark Worries and Misinformation Risks
As Sora’s videos spread across social media, new questions have emerged about authenticity and watermarking.
Tests have shown that Sora’s visible watermarks can be easily removed using free editing tools, while C2PA metadata, a digital signature meant to verify provenance, appears inconsistently across outputs.
Last month, NewsGuard reported that Sora-generated videos were used to support false narratives 80% of the time in their misinformation tests, including those tied to Russian propaganda. This has sparked calls for stronger AI content verification standards, potentially through Content Credentials, moderation APIs, and third-party watermark audits.
