TLDR
- OpenAI is reportedly integrating Sora AI video generation capabilities into ChatGPT, according to The Information
- The standalone Sora mobile application debuted in September 2025 with a TikTok-inspired interface
- January 2026 data from Appfigures revealed a 45% decline in monthly app installations
- The app disappeared from Apple’s top 100 chart on the U.S. App Store in early 2026
- Even a collaboration with Disney couldn’t reverse declining user engagement
According to a March 11, 2026 report from The Information, OpenAI intends to integrate its Sora AI video generation technology directly into ChatGPT. The report draws on information from sources familiar with the company’s internal plans.
OpenAI is planning to bring its AI video generator Sora directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to create and share AI-generated videos from simple prompts. The company is also expected to continue running Sora as a standalone app.

OpenAI has yet to publicly acknowledge these plans. The company remained unavailable for comment when contacted outside standard business hours.
Originally, Sora debuted as an independent mobile application in September 2025. The platform enabled users to produce and distribute AI-created videos through an interface reminiscent of TikTok.
Users could generate video content through text-based prompts. The platform also permitted creation of material connected to copyrighted properties, which could then be distributed through social media-style feeds within the app.
However, following initial launch excitement, the application encountered significant challenges by the start of 2026. Both download figures and revenue streams experienced dramatic declines.
Data compiled by Appfigures and reported by TechCrunch in January 2026 indicated that Sora’s installation numbers plunged 45% from the previous month. Revenue from users decreased simultaneously.
The application also fell off Apple’s prestigious top 100 apps list for the U.S. App Store. A comparable downturn occurred on Google’s Play Store platform.
OpenAI had established an agreement with Walt Disney to enable video creation featuring Disney intellectual property within Sora. Unfortunately, this partnership failed to produce sustained growth in user adoption.
Moving Sora Into ChatGPT
Integrating Sora within ChatGPT would expose the video generation technology to a substantially broader audience. ChatGPT boasts hundreds of millions of active users, dwarfing the user base the independent Sora application managed to capture.
According to The Information’s reporting, OpenAI intends to maintain the standalone Sora application even following the ChatGPT merger. A specific rollout timeline has not been disclosed.
Incorporating video generation functionality into ChatGPT may significantly increase operational expenses for OpenAI. Video AI models demand substantially greater computational resources than text-focused technologies.
Competition in AI Video
Sora faces competition from video generation platforms developed by Meta and Alphabet’s Google. Both technology giants have committed substantial resources to advancing text-to-video AI capabilities.
This decision to merge Sora with ChatGPT represents part of OpenAI’s larger initiative to extend beyond text-only applications. Multimodal systems capable of processing video, images, and audio content are increasingly viewed as the future direction for AI products.
Microsoft maintains an investment stake in OpenAI and has incorporated OpenAI technologies throughout its product ecosystem, including Bing search and Microsoft 365 productivity suite.
OpenAI’s approach suggests a strategic consolidation of features under the ChatGPT umbrella, which continues to serve as the company’s flagship and most extensively adopted platform.
