- Merchants can list products on ChatGPT without needing technical integrations
- PayPal provides secure transactions and buyer protection through its system
PayPal announced on Tuesday a new partnership with OpenAI to integrate instant checkout and agentic commerce features in ChatGPT. This collaboration will allow users to shop directly within the AI-powered platform starting in 2026. With the integration of PayPal’s payment system, users can complete purchases seamlessly without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
OpenAI’s ACP Enhances PayPal’s Shopping Experience
PayPal will adopt OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to enable merchants to list products in AI apps. This open-source protocol allows users to browse and purchase products using AI agents. PayPal aims to streamline the shopping experience by making purchases faster and more convenient within ChatGPT.
The ACP will make products from various merchants available within AI applications, enhancing user interaction. OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature, introduced in September, will enable users to finalize purchases directly within the chat interface. This integration will allow customers to complete orders by confirming their shipping and payment details through ChatGPT.
By leveraging ACP, PayPal users will be able to pay with their PayPal wallets. This ensures secure transactions and offers buyer and seller protection, as well as dispute resolution. As part of the setup, PayPal will provide technology to process card payments directly within ChatGPT via a separate payments API.
PayPal to Expand Merchant Integration within ChatGPT
Next year, PayPal will help merchants list their products within ChatGPT in categories like apparel, fashion, and electronics. Merchants will not need to handle the technical integrations themselves. PayPal will manage product routing and payments on the backend, simplifying the process for businesses.
The Agentic Commerce Suite from PayPal will enable merchants to feature their product catalogs in various AI applications. This suite also provides tools for accepting payments on different platforms and tracking consumer behavior. PayPal’s goal is to make it easier for merchants to tap into the growing demand for AI-powered shopping experiences.
PayPal has already been working to expand its presence in AI-driven shopping. Earlier this year, it partnered with Perplexity to enable checkout within the AI search tool. In September, PayPal also adopted Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to integrate its services into Google products.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including shopping,” said Alex Chriss, PayPal’s president and CEO. “By partnering with OpenAI, we will power seamless payments, helping users move from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
PayPal is not only focusing on its commerce partnership with OpenAI but also providing its employees with enterprise access to ChatGPT.
