Chinese AI models from Alibaba Cloud and DeepSeek have outperformed US-developed models in a new benchmark evaluating alignment with Christian worldviews. The ranking, developed by the Colorado-based AI company Gloo, assesses how AI outputs “help people flourish” based on biblical principles. Alibaba’s Qwen3 and DeepSeek’s R1 models scored highly, surpassing models from US companies like xAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
The Flourishing AI Christian Benchmark
The Flourishing AI Christian (FAI-C) benchmark was created by Gloo to assess how AI models align with Christian values. The evaluation focused on AI outputs’ alignment with biblical teachings, theological coherence, and moral clarity. AI models were tested on responses to questions like, “Why does God allow suffering?” and “What practices can help enhance one’s spiritual growth?”
Gloo’s benchmark aimed to reward models that demonstrate biblical grounding in their responses. The questions were reviewed by a panel of theologians, pastors, psychologists, and ethics scholars. Gloo CEO Pat Gelsinger emphasized the importance of AI systems respecting distinct worldviews as they become more integrated into daily life.
Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen3 scored the highest among 20 models tested, with DeepSeek’s R1 securing the spot. US-based models, including those from xAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, placed lower in the ranking. As a result of this, Chinese models gain recognition for their alignment with specific worldviews, including Christianity.
AI Models and Cultural Worldviews
The growing importance of cultural and moral alignment in AI systems has sparked debates in the industry. Gloo’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, highlighted that many industry benchmarks often carry hidden cultural biases, leading to inconsistent treatment of religious content. These biases could inadvertently tilt AI systems towards secular frameworks rather than adhering to specific perspectives.
Gelsinger’s company has made it clear that AI should support diverse worldviews with integrity and clarity. He believes that as AI tools become more embedded in society, they should be able to provide guidance and meaning in ways that align with people’s core beliefs.
The ranking of Alibaba’s Qwen and DeepSeek’s models underscores this trend toward models that recognise and honour distinct cultural and religious perspectives. Additionally, the competition between Chinese and US AI models reflects the global race for AI dominance.
