Reggie Fils-Aime Retiring From Presidential Position of Nintendo of America

After 15 years of memes and wholesome content from him, President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime is retiring. Fils-Aime is leaving on April 15th, with marketing head Doug Bowser replacing him, according to a press release from Nintendo.

As noted by Kotaku, Fils-Aime became a prodigy in the gaming community when, at E3 2004, he went on stage and claimed “my name is Reggie. I’m about kickin’ ass, I’m about takin’ names, and we’re about makin’ games.”

The soon to be former President has a legacy like no other. Even in an industry with public faces such as Phil Spencer or Major Nelson on Xbox, nobody generated as much happiness and fun as Fils-Aime did.

Reggie Fils-Aime

A gamer at heart, Reggie was always carrying around Nintendo products with him – ready to play at a moments notice. Despite being such a busy executive, the fact that he could find the time to engage with his projects is nothing short of admirable.

Leading With Pride

While he wasn’t a perfect President, the company saw more wins than losses over the past 15 years. He oversaw the success of the original Wii, the Nintendo 3DS, and the Switch. Nintendo’s WiiU was the only console that didn’t succeed overwhelmingly.

In the press release, Shuntaro Furukawa, the President of Nintendo Co., Ltd, shared his thoughts on the matter:

“I really appreciate everything Reggie has done for Nintendo. Inside and outside our company, Reggie is known as an exceptional leader. We are grateful that he is leaving the business in good shape with strong momentum. While we will miss him and we wish him the very best in his retirement, we are also pleased to have such an able successor ready to step into that role. Doug Bowser and the rest of the team will ensure a seamless transition and continued momentum for Nintendo.”

Reggie Fils-Aime also shared his thoughts, claiming that the company will never leave his heart in a quote filled with gaming nods:

“Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever. It’s a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘leveling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends.”

On the Nintendo Twitter, Reggie Fils-Aime shared a heartfelt video saying goodbye to all of his fans.

Moving Up Fast

Reggie was only at the company for three years, joining in 2003 as vice president of sales and marketing, before moving up to president and CEO. That said, the quote above was in 2004 before he became head.

“My body is ready” is another famous quote from the head, which is still a meme to this very day.

Doug Bowser also shared some final thoughts on Fils-Aime retiring:

“It has been my great fortune to work with and be mentored by Reggie for four years at Nintendo of America. And rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come.”

Bowser joined the company in May of 2015, named the Vice President of Sales.

Bowser is also the name of Nintendo mascot Mario’s biggest foe. Because of this, we’re sure to see jokes around the internet for the next few weeks. Who knows, maybe Mr. Bowser will start his own line of wholesome memes for the community to love.
