Rivian has unveiled detailed pricing and specifications for its much-anticipated R2 midsized SUV, marking a critical step in the company’s strategy to reach a broader segment of EV buyers. The automaker’s new model will start at $45,000 and top out at $57,990, depending on trim levels and optional features.
The first version to hit showrooms in the spring of 2026 will be the Performance Launch Edition. This dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) SUV offers an EPA-estimated range of 330 miles and starts at $57,990. Rivian plans to release additional trims over the next two years, including a premium version later this year starting at $53,990, a long-range standard model in early 2027 at $48,490, and a potential $45,000 entry-level variant expected in late 2027. The exact rollout of the lowest-priced model will depend on market demand for the higher trims.
Performance and Power Vary by Trim
The R2 lineup differentiates itself primarily through horsepower, torque, and acceleration. The Performance Launch Edition packs 656 horsepower and 609 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The premium AWD version produces 450 horsepower with 537 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the long-range standard model offers 350 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, with a 345-mile range and a 0–60 mph time of 5.9 seconds. Rivian has not yet disclosed the specs for the $45,000 standard version.
All R2 models share core features, including an 87.9 kWh battery pack and a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. The platform and motors are developed in-house, ensuring Rivian maintains control over production and performance consistency.

Customization and Upgrades
Rivian is emphasizing personalization for the R2, offering multiple exterior colors, including the standard Esker Silver, Catalina Cove metallic blue, and Half Moon Grey metallic. The Performance Launch Edition and premium trims come with a range of luxury touches, including birch wood interior accents, heated and ventilated seats, a nine-speaker audio system, and a unique torch flashlight in the driver’s door, a nod to Rivian’s playful design tradition.
Advanced driver-assistance features come standard, with the optional Rivian Autonomy+ package offering hands-free driving on certain highways. This package will cost $2,500 as a one-time fee or $49.99 per month. Full Level 4 “personal autonomy” capabilities will arrive in late 2026 with Gen 3 hardware, including a new computer and LiDAR sensor, offering higher levels of automated driving.
Strategic Importance for Rivian
The R2 SUV represents a pivotal vehicle for Rivian, balancing affordability, performance, and innovation. With pricing slightly above the January 2026 average new car purchase of $49,191, Rivian hopes to attract both tech-savvy and mainstream consumers while keeping production costs below its flagship R1 models. Analysts suggest that the R2’s combination of power, range, and customization could define Rivian’s path toward broader market penetration and profitability.
While initial deliveries will focus on higher-priced trims, the availability of more affordable versions later may expand Rivian’s reach, especially among buyers who prioritize range and essential features over high-end options.
