The electric vehicle manufacturer reported first-quarter 2026 deliveries of 10,365 units, exceeding Wall Street projections of 9,678 vehicles based on Visible Alpha consensus data. Manufacturing output reached 10,236 units, similarly outperforming the anticipated 9,852 figure.
This represents a significant improvement in performance metrics. During the first quarter of 2025, the company delivered only 8,640 vehicles while manufacturing 14,611 units — a discrepancy that indicated excess inventory accumulation during that period.
The stronger-than-expected results follow challenging market conditions in late 2025. When federal EV incentives worth $7,500 ended in September, vehicle costs increased and consumer demand weakened. The fourth quarter of 2025 saw reduced delivery numbers as a consequence.
Market dynamics have shifted favorably. Following the outbreak of conflict with Iran in February, U.S. fuel costs have surged considerably, potentially driving increased consumer interest in electric vehicles. Industry observers suggest this trend could prove advantageous for both Rivian and its larger competitor Tesla.
Despite exceeding expectations, shares declined 1.2% during premarket hours. RIVN has fallen over 24% year-to-date in 2026, while short sellers hold positions representing 11.8% of available shares.
R2 Model Set for Spring Introduction
The forthcoming R2 vehicle represents a pivotal element in Rivian’s expansion strategy. Customer deliveries will commence this spring. The base-model R2, with an anticipated starting price near $45,000, is scheduled for release next year and will compete directly with Tesla’s Model Y Premium, currently priced at $44,990.
According to company statements, the R2 is projected to attract a substantially broader consumer demographic compared to its existing R1T pickup and R1S SUV offerings.
Strategic Uber Collaboration Provides Boost
Rivian unveiled a comprehensive partnership with Uber in recent weeks. The arrangement includes Uber’s commitment to invest as much as $1.25 billion in the EV manufacturer, along with plans to integrate autonomous R2 SUVs into its ride-hailing fleet beginning in 2028.
This strategic alliance provides Rivian with significant capital infusion and a clear pathway for commercializing its self-driving technology initiatives.
The company maintained its previously announced 2026 delivery target range of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles. Complete first-quarter financial results are scheduled for release on April 30 following market close.
