Key Takeaways
- Shopify’s merchant base can now facilitate sales directly within ChatGPT using Agentic Storefronts
- All payments route through Shopify’s native checkout system instead of ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature
- Sellers maintain complete control over customer information and serve as the official merchant of record
- The platform extends across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini applications
- A newly introduced Agentic subscription tier enables non-Shopify businesses to distribute products through these AI platforms
Shopify (SHOP) has unveiled a groundbreaking integration that enables its merchant community to conduct transactions directly within ChatGPT, marking a significant advancement in the company’s AI-driven commerce strategy.
$SHOP just gave 5.6 million merchants distribution channel that reaches 880 million monthly active users.
That’s not a partnership announcement. That’s infrastructure.

This functionality operates via Shopify’s Agentic Storefront platform, which debuted in December. The system bridges merchant product inventories with artificial intelligence platforms, enabling consumers to explore and purchase items without exiting conversational interfaces.
ChatGPT’s user base can now explore merchandise from Shopify’s extensive merchant network, evaluate alternatives, and finalize transactions via an integrated browser. Desktop users experience checkout redirection to the merchant’s proprietary online store.
According to Shopify, merchants face no additional transaction charges beyond their existing processing rates. Purchase orders appear in the merchant dashboard with ChatGPT referral tags, providing sellers with precise attribution tracking for each transaction.
The company emphasizes that payment processing bypasses ChatGPT’s proprietary Instant Checkout system. All financial transactions channel through Shopify’s established checkout and payment framework, preserving merchants’ status as the official “merchant of record.”
Complete Data Ownership Remains With Sellers
This arrangement carries significant implications. Merchants preserve complete authority over customer connections and information, regardless of whether transactions begin within a ChatGPT interaction.
“Shopping in ChatGPT begins with discovery,” said Neel Ajjarapu, Commerce Product Lead at OpenAI. “By integrating products from Shopify’s entire merchant ecosystem, we’re making millions of merchants and billions of products instantly more discoverable.”
According to Mani Fazeli, Shopify’s VP of Product, the company has been developing this capability for an extended period. “Agentic commerce isn’t something we’re reacting to; it’s a vision we’re bringing to life at the very frontier of commerce and AI.”
This ChatGPT integration joins an existing suite of connections that encompasses Microsoft Copilot alongside Google’s AI Mode and Gemini application. Shopify reports that thousands of merchants currently transact through Copilot.
Fresh Agentic Subscription Tier Welcomes External Brands
Shopify simultaneously announced the general availability of its Agentic subscription package, a specialized tier designed for companies operating outside Shopify’s primary e-commerce ecosystem.
This subscription model allows businesses to integrate their product offerings into Shopify Catalog and achieve discoverability across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, the Gemini application, and the Shop App — all without migrating their complete e-commerce infrastructure to Shopify.
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open framework developed collaboratively with Google, powers the Google platform connections. The protocol enjoys backing from major retailers and payment processors including Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa.
Fenty Beauty represents one of the early adopter brands leveraging the platform. “Shopify puts Fenty Beauty in the conversations shoppers are already having,” said Sapna Shah Parikh, SVP Global Marketing at Fenty Beauty Brands at Kendo.
Shop Pay integration with Microsoft Copilot is scheduled for imminent release, which would enable customers to complete entire purchases within that environment.
Shopify confirms that product information synchronizes instantaneously across all AI distribution channels, eliminating requirements for multiple applications or disconnected data management systems.
