TLDRs;
- OpenAI launches Sora in Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan for AI video creation.
- The app supports local languages and features Cameos for personalized videos.
- Sora users can create up to 15-second videos, Pro users 25 seconds.
- Safety measures include watermarks, teen restrictions, and parental controls.
OpenAI has officially launched its Sora app in Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan, marking a major expansion of its AI-powered video creation platform into Asia.
Originally released in the US and Canada in September, Sora allows users to generate, remix, and share short AI-generated videos on a customizable feed. The app’s entry into Southeast Asia provides local creators access to advanced AI tools in their native languages.
The app is currently free on iOS in Thailand, and users do not need an invite code to join. However, OpenAI has indicated that access may shift to invite-only mode if GPU demand exceeds capacity after 24 to 48 hours, ensuring performance remains stable.
Local Language Support and Cameo Features
Sora’s key features are designed to make AI video creation intuitive and personal. Users can create content in local languages, including Thai, and leverage the app’s “Cameos” functionality.
Cameos allow users to insert their likeness into generated videos after a verification process, opening up new possibilities for personalization in content creation.
While standard users can generate videos up to 15 seconds long, Pro users accessing the web interface can create videos up to 25 seconds. This includes access to storyboarding tools, which enable more structured video planning and editing.
Safety Measures and Usage Controls
OpenAI has emphasized that safety and responsible use are central to Sora’s design. Videos include visible and invisible watermarks, teen usage restrictions, and parental controls. The app’s usage limits, currently in place to manage GPU load and prevent misuse, may evolve over time based on demand and technical capacity.
These measures are part of OpenAI’s broader approach to responsible AI deployment, ensuring that content is not only engaging but also safe for younger audiences.
Earlier this month, OpenAI released Sora 2, its upgraded AI model for video and audio generation. The model improves upon prior versions by generating videos that better adhere to physical laws and follow complex, multi-step instructions. Users can insert themselves or others into AI-generated scenes using short video and audio samples, creating highly personalized content.
OpenAI plans to integrate Sora 2 into its API while maintaining access to earlier models. The Sora app complements this by offering a social platform where users can create, remix, and share content while controlling who can use their likenesses.
Strong Launch Performance in North America
The Sora app’s first-week adoption in the US and Canada nearly matched ChatGPT’s launch, reaching 627,000 iOS downloads.
Despite being invite-only initially, Sora topped the US App Store shortly after release, demonstrating strong consumer interest in AI-powered creative tools. OpenAI hopes that a similar reception will follow in Asia as the app reaches Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
With this expansion, OpenAI aims to make AI video creation widely accessible while maintaining safety and personalization, further solidifying its presence in the global AI content creation market.
