President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Spain on Tuesday, threatening to terminate all commercial relationships after Madrid refused to permit American military aircraft access to Spanish bases for operations targeting Iran.

During discussions at the White House, the president revealed he had instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to “cut off all dealings with Spain.” Trump emphasized his authority, stating, “I could tomorrow stop, or todayβ¦ stop everything having to do with Spain.”
These remarks came during a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the presidential residence.
American military aircraft had already vacated Spanish installations by Monday following Madrid’s declaration that its facilities would not support offensive military actions against Iran.
The president criticized Spain’s leadership quality, citing both the nation’s reluctance to increase NATO defense expenditures and its stance regarding the Iran situation.
Madrid had earlier opposed a NATO initiative requiring member states to allocate 3.5% of their GDP toward defense by 2035. Prime Minister Pedro SΓ‘nchez dismissed this benchmark as “not only unreasonable but also counterproductive.”
Chancellor Merz indicated that NATO continues efforts to “convince Spain” to align its military spending with the alliance’s updated objectives.
Spain Pushes Back on Trump’s Threats
The following day, SΓ‘nchez delivered a nationally televised address, reaffirming Spain’s firm opposition to the military strikes.
“This is how humanity’s great disasters start,” SΓ‘nchez declared. “You cannot play Russian roulette with the destiny of millions.”
The Spanish leader distilled his country’s position to four simple words: “No to the war.” He emphasized this stance reflected Spain’s fundamental principles rather than political opportunism.
“We’re not going to be complicit in something that’s bad for the world nor contrary to our values and interests simply to avoid reprisals from someone,” he stated, unmistakably referring to Trump’s economic threats.
JosΓ© Manuel Albares, Spain’s Foreign Minister, reiterated that Spanish territory would remain off-limits for Iran operations, while simultaneously expressing support for democratic aspirations and human rights within Iran.
The Broader Conflict
Joint American-Israeli military operations against Iranian targets commenced Saturday. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reportedly killed during the initial phase of operations.
Trump has projected the military campaign to span “four to five weeks,” while noting American forces possess the capacity for extended operations if necessary.
Tehran has responded with counterattacks targeting Israel, American military installations, diplomatic missions, and locations throughout Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
A minimum of six American military personnel perished when an Iranian strike destroyed a temporary command center in Kuwait.
On Tuesday, Trump defended his decision to initiate strikes, claiming he believed Iran was “going to attack first,” and maintained he acted preemptively.
