TLDR
- Trust Wallet has launched a $7 million compensation process for users affected by a Chrome extension security breach.
- Only version 2.68 of the Trust Wallet Chrome extension was compromised in the incident.
- Victims are required to submit wallet addresses, transaction hashes, and personal details through the official claims portal.
- Trust Wallet confirmed that each claim will be verified before any reimbursement is issued.
- Binance founder Changpeng Zhao stated that all verified losses will be fully covered.
Trust Wallet has started a formal compensation process after a Chrome extension exploit exposed user seed phrases and drained funds. The breach impacted users of version 2.68 only, with attackers stealing over $6 million across multiple blockchains, including Bitcoin. Victims can now submit claims through Trust Wallet’s official portal, with each case undergoing careful verification.
Trust Wallet Launches Claims Process for Breach Victims
Trust Wallet confirmed that users affected by the extension breach can submit claims through its official support form. The form requires details like email, country, affected wallet addresses, and transaction hashes for processing. The company said it will prioritize all submissions and compensate verified victims.
Trust Wallet’s team began contacting impacted users as early as December 26. “Each case needs careful verification to ensure both accuracy and safety,” the company stated. They also warned users to avoid scams and only use the official form hosted on its site.
The company urged users to ignore unofficial forms and impersonated accounts on platforms like Telegram. There have been growing reports of fake support accounts sending unsolicited messages to users. Trust Wallet said it will provide regular updates as the review process progresses.
Chrome Extension Version 2.68 Identified as Compromised
Only version 2.68 of Trust Wallet’s Chrome extension contained the malicious code that exposed user recovery phrases. ZachXBT, a blockchain investigator, flagged the issue after users reported unauthorized transactions. He noted that victims saw funds drained within minutes of installing the update.
Trust Wallet immediately advised users to disable the compromised version. It instructed users to upgrade to version 2.69 to prevent further exposure. The extension had around one million users, according to the Chrome Web Store listing.
Attackers embedded malicious code that captured seed phrases through the browser’s permissions. Users reported that simply importing a seed phrase triggered wallet draining. The extension appeared normal during the Chrome update process, hiding the malicious behavior.
Losses Reimbursements Confirmed by Binance Founder
Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, confirmed on X that Trust Wallet would cover all verified user losses. He estimated the total stolen amount to be around $7 million. Trust Wallet was acquired by Binance in 2018.
Zhao reaffirmed that Trust Wallet will reimburse affected users once their claims are verified. He emphasized that users should report only through official channels to ensure eligibility. The company is working actively to ensure a smooth compensation process.
Zhao’s statement followed Trust Wallet’s official confirmation of the breach on December 25. He reiterated the company’s commitment to security and transparency. All investigations are currently ongoing, and verifications continue.
Wallet Exploits Continue Across the Crypto Space
The Trust Wallet breach reflects a growing trend in personal wallet attacks during 2025. Chainalysis reported over $3.4 billion stolen from January to early December. A single incident at Bybit in February accounted for nearly half of that total.
Personal wallet compromises rose from just over 7% in 2022 to over one-third in 2025. This figure excludes the Bybit attack and focuses on individual wallet breaches. Trust Wallet emphasized that only its Chrome extension was affected.
The company confirmed its mobile app and other extension versions remained secure. Affected users must act quickly to file claims and provide required details. Trust Wallet continues to process each submission and verify cases for reimbursement.
