On Monday, March 16, Apple revealed the AirPods Max 2, marking the debut refresh of its premium over-ear headphones since their initial release in December 2020.
The updated headphones utilize Apple’s H2 chip, the same processor that powers both the AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 models. This chip integration introduces numerous capabilities to the Max series that were absent from the original version.
According to Apple, the latest headphones feature Active Noise Cancellation technology that performs up to 1.5 times better than its predecessor. This enhanced performance results from the H2 chip combined with advanced computational audio processing.
The improved ANC specifically addresses common noise sources including aircraft engines and public transportation systems. Additionally, Transparency mode has been refined to deliver a more authentic listening experience.
Regarding sound performance, Apple integrated a fresh high dynamic range amplifier. The manufacturer claims this enhancement boosts audio clarity while maintaining the signature sound characteristics of the original AirPods Max.
For the first time, AirPods Max now supports 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback. Users can access this feature through the bundled USB-C cable.
First-Time Features for AirPods Max
Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation make their debut on the Max product line. These capabilities were previously exclusive to the second-generation AirPods Pro.
Live Translation, driven by Apple Intelligence, enables real-time multilingual communication. Voice Isolation leverages the H2 chip’s computational audio to eliminate background sounds during phone conversations.
Conversation Awareness intelligently reduces media volume when the user begins talking to someone nearby. Adaptive Audio dynamically modifies ANC and Transparency settings according to the user’s surroundings.
Content creators benefit from two specialized features. Studio-quality audio recording caters to podcasters, interviewers, and music professionals. The Camera remote function enables users to control iPhone or iPad photography and videography through the Digital Crown.
The refreshed AirPods Max also deliver gaming enhancements. When paired with Game Mode across iOS, macOS, or iPadOS devices, users experience minimized audio delay.
Cost, Color Options, and Launch Details
AirPods Max 2 retail for $549 in the United States. This matches the original model’s launch price, maintaining consistent pricing across generations.
Consumers can choose from five color variants: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
Pre-orders launch on March 25 through Apple’s online store and the Apple Store application. Physical store availability and shipments commence in early April.
Apple highlighted environmental advancements as well. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate 100% recycled rare earth elements across all magnetic components and 100% recycled polyester throughout the ear cushion materials.
New Apple Music members receive a complimentary three-month subscription when purchasing AirPods Max 2.
