TLDR
- OpenAI has postponed the rollout of an “adult mode” feature for ChatGPT designed to enable sexually explicit text conversations
- Safety advisers cautioned the tool could become a “sexy suicide coach” given users’ emotional attachments to AI
- Age verification technology incorrectly identifies approximately 12% of minors as adults
- Given ChatGPT’s ~100 million weekly underage users, the error rate risks exposing millions of teenagers to inappropriate material
- The company maintains it will eventually launch the feature but requires additional time to refine the user experience
OpenAI has indefinitely postponed its controversial “adult mode” feature for ChatGPT following significant pushback from internal teams, external advisers, and child safety advocates concerned about teenage exposure and psychological harm.
ChatGPT’s “adult mode” feature is getting delayed again:
• The feature was initially announced in October
• In December, it was delayed until Q1 2026
• Now, OpenAI tells Axios, “We’re pushing out the launch of adult mode so we can focus on work that is a higher priority for… pic.twitter.com/uDQx2DhRJ6

The proposed functionality, initially suggested by CEO Sam Altman in recent months, would enable users to engage in sexually explicit text-based exchanges with the AI assistant. Altman defended the initiative as a way to “treat adult users like adults” while noting potential benefits for user growth and company revenue.
However, the proposal immediately encountered substantial internal resistance.
During a January gathering, OpenAI’s well-being advisory council members reportedly expressed unanimous and intense opposition. This council comprises specialists in psychology and cognitive neuroscience.
One adviser cautioned that OpenAI was potentially creating what they termed a “sexy suicide coach.” This stark warning referenced documented incidents where individuals had ended their lives after developing powerful emotional attachments to ChatGPT.
Council members additionally highlighted concerns about pathological dependency on the chatbot and the likelihood that underage users would circumvent any age-gating mechanisms implemented.
The fundamental technical challenge centers on OpenAI’s age-detection technology. Testing revealed the system incorrectly categorizes minors as adults approximately 12% of the time. With ChatGPT serving roughly 100 million users under 18 weekly, this failure rate could grant millions of adolescents access to adult-oriented conversations.
Age Verification Problems
The organization had intended to deploy its age-verification infrastructure prior to activating adult mode. Following discovery of the accuracy problems, OpenAI opted for a gradual implementation to enhance precision.
OpenAI has simultaneously wrestled with filtering illegal material, including depictions of non-consensual activities or child exploitation, while permitting legitimate adult discourse. Internal personnel indicated the safety systems were not sufficiently developed.
Upon eventual release, OpenAI intends to restrict adult mode to text-only interactions. The system will not produce erotic imagery, audio, or video materials.
Other AI Companies and Adult Content
Multiple competing AI platforms currently permit certain forms of adult-oriented content. Elon Musk’s xAI introduced a flirtatious persona to its Grok chatbot, though Musk subsequently limited access to paying subscribers. Meta permits its AI assistant to participate in romantic role-playing scenarios but restricts the feature from accounts registered to minors.
In late 2024, a 14-year-old Florida boy tragically died by suicide following the development of an intense emotional connection with a Character.AI chatbot. His mother initiated legal action, prompting Character.AI to settle the lawsuit and implement stricter limitations on teenage access.
OpenAI affirmed its continued support for the underlying principle of providing adult content options to mature users. The company indicated it will prioritize other enhancements for the immediate future, including improvements to ChatGPT’s personality customization and personalization capabilities.
Sources familiar with the situation suggest the postponement will extend for at least one month.
