Shares of AMC Entertainment (AMC) experienced a significant uptick of roughly 7% during Friday’s trading session following a forceful public statement from CEO Adam Aron challenging Robinhood Markets regarding what he characterized as unsanctioned tokenized representations of AMC equity.
AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc., AMC
During premarket hours on Friday, the stock changed hands at $2.68, reflecting a 5.57% increase, with momentum continuing throughout regular trading.
In a Thursday post on X, Aron stated that Robinhood “apparently is behind an effort related to ‘tokenized real-world assets including Stock Tokens'” encompassing AMC alongside over 190 additional corporations.
The executive emphasized that AMC maintains “no connection to this at all” and explicitly does “not condone it in any way.”
The CEO characterized the initiative as “contemptible” and “outrageous,” revealing that AMC’s external securities legal advisors would evaluate potential avenues to compel Robinhood to discontinue the program.
Understanding the Tokenized Instruments
According to Robinhood’s official website, the Stock Tokens represent tokenized debt instruments issued through Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited, an entity established under Jersey jurisdiction.
These instruments lack registration under United States securities legislation and are prohibited from being marketed or distributed to individuals classified as U.S. persons.
Robinhood’s chief executive, Vlad Tenev, offered a brief response to Aron’s statement, posing a straightforward query: “What’s the concern?”
Aron fired back that the ramifications were “almost existential,” contending the tokens could erode the fundamental connection between authentic equity ownership and corporate capital-raising capabilities.
The CEO further highlighted that traditional equity ownership confers shareholder voting privileges, whereas the tokenized instruments merely offer economic participation without conferring any legal ownership entitlements.
Aron demanded that Robinhood “CEASE AND DESIST” all trading activity involving AMC tokens with immediate effect.
New Distribution Venture Leawood Films Emerges
In concurrent developments, AMC revealed the establishment of Leawood Films, a distribution entity dedicated to shepherding smaller-scale and mid-budget productions into theatrical exhibition.
This initiative will not engage in production financing or screenplay creation. Rather, it will concentrate on distributing fully-funded or finished films leveraging AMC’s extensive theater infrastructure and promotional capabilities.
The announcement follows an impressive second quarter performance for AMC, propelled by major theatrical releases such as The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which contributed to record-breaking attendance figures.
Leawood Films represents an expansion of AMC’s previous distribution endeavors, including successful partnerships with Taylor Swift and Beyonce for concert film releases in 2023 and 2025.
Industry veterans Toby Emmerich, Ricky Strauss and Kyle Davies will serve in advisory capacities for the venture. AMC anticipates inaugural releases commencing no sooner than 2027 or 2028.
From a chart perspective, AMC currently trades above all major moving average indicators. The 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages formed a bullish golden cross pattern in July. The relative strength index registers 50.46, indicating neutral momentum.
Macquarie reaffirmed a Neutral rating on September 2 while elevating its price objective to $3. AMC currently holds a Hold consensus recommendation with an average analyst price target of $2.74.
