Young investors on Binance are demonstrating a marked preference for exchange-traded funds while maintaining lower trading frequencies compared to previous generations, new research from Binance Research indicates.
During the first week of August, ETFs represented one-quarter of all Gen Z equity trading activity. This marked an increase from the 21.9% allocation observed in July and the 18.5% recorded in June.
During the same timeframe, individual stock allocations declined from 77% in June to 74.2% by July’s end.
Younger Investors Show Reduced Trading Frequency and Extended Hold Periods
The exchange analyzed trading patterns across four generational cohorts: Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. The analysis encompassed direct equity positions, tokenized stock products, and traditional finance perpetual contracts.
Gen Z participants executed an average of 13 monthly transactions in TradFi perpetuals. By comparison, Millennials completed 17 trades monthly, while Gen X traders averaged 16.5 transactions.
Analysis of Gen Z direct equity accounts revealed that 22% had never executed a sell transaction. This percentage exceeded the 19% recorded for Gen X and significantly surpassed the 9% figure for Baby Boomers. Millennials demonstrated the highest proportion of purchase-only accounts at 30%.
Popular holdings among Gen Z investors who exclusively buy included Broadcom, Tesla, and the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF.
The exchange stopped short of confirming whether the purchase-only pattern represents a deliberate long-term investment philosophy. Since Binance’s direct equity offering debuted in June, the available data spans a limited timeframe.
Limited Appetite for Leveraged ETF Products
Younger traders demonstrated minimal engagement with leveraged and inverse ETF instruments. According to Binance’s findings, 88.2% of Gen Z TradFi perpetual accounts showed zero activity in these specialized products.
Millennials and Gen X showed slightly higher participation rates, with 84.5% and 85.9% inactive respectively, positioning Gen Z as the least engaged demographic in leveraged ETF trading among economically active age groups.
The exchange offered no explanation for this disparity, leaving open questions about whether risk tolerance, product access restrictions, or other factors drove the difference.
The tokenized equity marketplace experienced continued expansion throughout this analysis period. Data from RWA.xyz indicated distributed tokenized stock values reached $2.37 billion as of Saturday, representing approximately 5% growth over the preceding month.
Binance’s bStocks platform temporarily eclipsed Kraken’s xStocks to claim the second-place position among tokenized stock issuers. At maximum capacity, bStocks commanded approximately $624 million compared to xStocks’ $579 million.
By Saturday’s close, xStocks had reclaimed its position with $603 million in assets, while bStocks retreated to $535 million. Ondo Finance maintained its position as market leader with $962 million.
The industry has witnessed explosive user growth. DWF Labs documented a 92% surge in holder accounts across five leading tokenized stock platforms during July, reaching a total of 752,000 users within 30 days.
Robinhood commanded the largest user base with 328,000 holders but managed just $44 million in tokenized stock assets. Ondo maintained control of $857 million while xStocks held $487 million during that measurement period.
Crypto.com recently joined the competitive landscape, introducing tokenized derivative products linked to 1,500 U.S. equities and ETFs for qualified users throughout the European Economic Area and additional authorized jurisdictions.
