The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation has unveiled a continuous support line designed to combat the escalating issue of compulsive gambling throughout the nation. The National Problem Gambling Helpline now operates without interruption, providing assistance at all times.
Individuals seeking help can dial (02) 8248-9568 to reach specially trained counseling professionals who provide guidance and emotional support.
Gaming Regulator Teams Up With Specialized Recovery Organization
The establishment of this support service represents a joint effort between PAGCOR and the Seagulls Flock Organization Inc., a nonprofit entity dedicated to assisting individuals struggling with addictive behaviors and compulsive gambling. The organization mobilizes psychologists, trained counselors, social service professionals, and academic researchers for this mission.
Chairman Alejandro Tengco of PAGCOR stated the program demonstrates the organization’s dedication to promoting responsible gaming practices with a humanitarian approach. He recognized that while many individuals engage in gaming recreationally without complications, others suffer significant financial losses and emotional distress.
Tengco commended the Seagulls Flock Organization for delivering both professional knowledge and empathetic care. He noted the organization’s track record in assisting numerous individuals toward recovery and personal restoration.
Teresita “Chit” Castillo, who chairs SFO, explained that the helpline will deliver initial assessment, appropriate guidance, and sustained support services. She emphasized that established emergency protocols will be implemented when crisis intervention becomes necessary.
Castillo further explained that this collaboration connects regulatory authority with therapeutic, research-supported interventions. These services encompass counseling appointments and connections to specialized treatment facilities and rehabilitation programs.
Presently, the helpline functions with 12 para-counselors operating across three daily shifts to maintain continuous availability. Castillo expressed optimism about recruiting additional counseling staff soon.
The service extends beyond those personally affected by gambling problems. Relatives and family members impacted by another person’s betting behavior may also access support through the helpline.
Mounting Scrutiny of Digital Betting Platforms
This initiative arrives amid intensifying focus on gambling dependency throughout the Philippines. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has previously recognized the matter as an area requiring governmental attention.
Yet the president has not offered recent information regarding a proposed stakeholders’ conference intended to formulate a thorough digital gambling framework. He has also refrained from endorsing complete prohibition, despite pressure from multiple advocacy organizations.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has emerged as among the most outspoken opponents. Religious authorities have characterized online betting as a profound moral and societal emergency. Church officials cautioned that it is causing devastation to people, households, and entire communities.
Tengco countered arguments for complete prohibition by highlighting the industry’s financial impact. He noted that digital gaming generates upward of P100 billion annually in government revenue.
The industry additionally creates direct employment opportunities for roughly 32,000 workers. Many thousands more earn livelihoods through associated commercial activities.
Tengco attributed much of the documented harm to unlicensed digital gambling operations. He asserted these unmonitored platforms permit underage individuals to wager money and potentially develop dependencies.
The ongoing discussion regarding appropriate oversight of internet-based gambling in the Philippines continues without resolution. Meanwhile, PAGCOR maintains the helpline represents meaningful progress in addressing the personal consequences of the gaming industry. The dozen para-counselors currently managing the service handle incoming calls throughout all scheduled shifts, with organizational growth under consideration.
