TLDR
- A cryptocurrency holder using the alias Cprkrn successfully retrieved 5 Bitcoin valued at approximately $320,000 with assistance from Anthropic’s Claude AI system
- The digital wallet remained inactive since the beginning of 2015 following a forgotten password change
- Claude analyzed more than 1GB of information spanning several computers, storage devices, and email platforms
- More than 3.5 trillion password combinations were attempted before a seed phrase discovered in an old college notebook provided access
- The entire AI-assisted recovery operation cost only $15
A user known as Cprkrn on X platform claims to have successfully retrieved five Bitcoin valued at approximately $320,000 by leveraging Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant to regain entry to a cryptocurrency wallet that had been inaccessible for over ten years.
The digital wallet had remained dormant since the start of 2015. According to Cprkrn, the issue began when he modified his blockchain.info password and subsequently forgot the new credentials. Having generated intricate passwords, he found himself unable to remember the updated access code.
For two months, he attempted various brute force recovery methods. With Claude’s assistance, he tested approximately 34 billion password variations utilizing BTCRecover, an open-source wallet recovery application, combined with Python programming. These attempts proved unsuccessful.
Claude subsequently employed Hashcat, a specialized password recovery utility, to evaluate an additional 3.4 trillion potential passwords. This approach also yielded no results. According to a report generated by Claude, the complete operation required merely $15 worth of AI computational resources.
In a last-ditch effort, Cprkrn compiled old notebooks from his college days and a previously used laptop, feeding all available information into Claude. The AI system ultimately processed over one gigabyte of data from two Mac computers, two external storage drives, an Apple Notes backup, iCloud Mail archives, a Gmail account, and X platform messages.
How the Wallet Was Finally Unlocked
Claude located a wallet backup file stored on his former college computer with a timestamp from December 2019. By utilizing a mnemonic phrase found in one of his old notebooks, Cprkrn successfully decrypted the backup and retrieved the wallet’s seed phrase.
Blockchain transaction data validates the account. Records from Blockchain.com indicate that roughly 5 Bitcoin transferred from wallet address “14VJy…ofuE6” through five separate transactions on May 13, 2026. The cryptocurrency had remained stationary since early 2015.
The narrative quickly gained traction across social media platforms, capturing interest from prominent cryptocurrency personalities including Nic Carter, Laura Shin, and Jesse Pollak.
However, not everyone viewed the story’s presentation favorably. Several members of the crypto community argued that Cprkrn exaggerated Claude’s contribution. A Reddit user named MeteorSwarmGallifrey commented that Claude “didn’t do anything other than search his files” and that nothing “groundbreaking” had taken place.
Lost Bitcoin Is a Widespread Problem
This recovery highlights the significant issue of permanently inaccessible Bitcoin. Industry analysts estimate that between 2.3 million and 4 million Bitcoin remain lost or unreachable, representing approximately 11% to 19% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply. Numerous companies have emerged specifically to assist individuals attempting to recover lost digital assets.
This situation differs from cases like that of James Howell, who in 2025 continued his efforts to recover a hard drive containing thousands of Bitcoin from a municipal landfill.
Cprkrn acknowledged that he “would’ve been too dumb to figure it out” without Claude’s assistance.
