- Anthropic continues using AWS as Amazon deepens artificial intelligence ties
Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) traded at $238.74, down 0.59%, during Tuesday’s session as the company updated part of its agreement with Anthropic. The revised arrangement changes how Amazon pays for Anthropic’s artificial intelligence models beginning next year. Meanwhile, Amazon maintained that the revised payment structure will not increase its overall costs.
Amazon switches Anthropic agreement to token-based pricing
Amazon will replace its existing compute-hour payment model with a token-based pricing structure for Anthropic’s artificial intelligence models. The change will take effect next year under an updated commercial agreement between both companies. However, the companies will continue their broader partnership across cloud computing and artificial intelligence services.
The Information reported that the new payment structure could increase Amazon’s expenses for accessing Anthropic’s large language models. However, Amazon rejected that claim and stated that the revised agreement does not raise its operating costs. The company also said both firms continue expanding their technical collaboration through existing partnerships.
Amazon relies on Anthropic’s technology across several artificial intelligence products and services. Those products include the Alexa shopping assistant, the Kiro coding platform, and the Quick workplace assistant. Therefore, Anthropic’s models remain integrated into multiple consumer and enterprise offerings across Amazon’s ecosystem.
Amazon expands long-term artificial intelligence partnerships
Amazon and Anthropic established their partnership in 2023 through a multibillion-dollar investment agreement. Amazon invested $4 billion while Anthropic selected Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider. In addition, Anthropic adopted Amazon’s custom artificial intelligence chips for model training and inference workloads.
Earlier this year, Amazon agreed to invest up to $25 billion more in Anthropic. The additional commitment strengthened the existing relationship between the two companies as demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continued to grow. Consequently, Amazon expanded its financial support while maintaining Anthropic’s use of AWS infrastructure.
The partnership also supports Amazon’s strategy of strengthening its artificial intelligence capabilities across cloud services and consumer products. Anthropic continues developing the Claude family of language models while operating on Amazon’s cloud infrastructure. Therefore, both companies maintain long-term collaboration across model development and deployment.
Amazon broadens its artificial intelligence ecosystem beyond Anthropic
Amazon has also expanded its artificial intelligence strategy through a separate agreement with OpenAI. Under that arrangement, Amazon plans to invest up to $50 billion while supporting OpenAI’s infrastructure needs through Amazon Web Services. The agreement also extends Amazon’s role within the broader artificial intelligence market.
OpenAI will make its models available through Amazon Bedrock under the partnership. Amazon will also gain access to OpenAI’s models for integration into selected products and services. As a result, Amazon continues expanding artificial intelligence options available across its cloud platform.
The updated Anthropic payment model reflects another operational change within Amazon’s broader artificial intelligence strategy. At the same time, the company continues supporting multiple artificial intelligence partners through long-term infrastructure and investment agreements. These partnerships strengthen Amazon’s cloud ecosystem while expanding artificial intelligence capabilities across its business operations.
