Shares of American Airlines (AAL) started Monday’s session at $13.82 following confirmation that the airline has scaled back its fourth quarter 2026 capacity expansion targets, based on Bank of America’s weekly airline capacity monitoring report.

The carrier reduced its domestic capacity growth outlook for Q4 by 110 basis points, adjusting it downward to 10.1%. The most significant revision occurred in November, where projected growth was slashed by 300 basis points.
American additionally lowered its Atlantic route capacity forecast by 140 basis points to 1.8%, while Pacific capacity growth was reduced by 240 basis points, resulting in a negative 2.9% projection.
These adjustments position American’s total Q4 system capacity growth at 6.5%, representing a decline from the previous week’s 7.6% forecast. Despite the reduction, this remains higher than Delta Air Lines’ 3.2% and United Airlines‘ 5.7% for the corresponding quarter.
Industry-wide, domestic Q4 capacity growth declined 30 basis points to 3.7%. United reduced its domestic projection by 20 basis points to 9.6%. Alaska Air Group decreased its forecast by 20 basis points to 3.6%. Frontier Airlines cut growth expectations by 150 basis points to 11.3%.
Southwest Airlines moved against the industry trend, increasing capacity by 20 basis points for the September through December period, establishing its Q4 growth at 3.5%.
Transportation Security Administration checkpoint data through August 23 showed passenger throughput declining 3.7% compared to the prior year on a seven-day trailing average, representing a deterioration from the previous week’s 3.0% drop.
Major Institutional Investment Activity Continues
Notwithstanding the capacity reductions, institutional capital has continued flowing into AAL. Connor Clark & Lunn Investment Management initiated a position valued at approximately $119.6 million during Q2, acquiring more than 6.6 million shares and establishing approximately 1% ownership in the carrier.
Additional smaller investment firms have also increased exposure. Keating Financial Advisory Services, Pinnacle Holdings, and Clearstead Advisors all established or expanded holdings in recent quarters. Institutional investors and hedge funds collectively control 52.44% of outstanding AAL shares.
Corporate insiders have demonstrated opposing behavior. SVP Angela Owens divested 40,077 shares on July 31 at an average price of $15.26, while COO David Seymour sold 56,456 shares on June 25 at $18.00 per share. Collectively, insiders disposed of more than 205,000 shares worth approximately $3.4 million during the previous quarter.
Wall Street Maintains Moderate Outlook
The analyst community’s consensus rating on AAL remains at “Hold” with a mean price target of $19.03. Morgan Stanley maintains the most optimistic perspective, elevating its target to $24.00 with an “Overweight” designation. Deutsche Bank also assigns a “Buy” rating with an $18.00 price objective. Barclays and Bank of America both maintain “Neutral” or “Equal Weight” stances with $19.00 targets.
AAL’s 50-day moving average is positioned at $15.85, while the 200-day moving average sits at $13.72. The company maintains a market capitalization of $9.15 billion.
During its latest earnings release on July 23, American delivered $0.15 earnings per share for the quarter, significantly exceeding the $0.03 analyst consensus estimate. Revenue totaled $16.73 billion, representing a 16.3% year-over-year increase. Full-year 2026 EPS guidance ranges from -$0.65 to $0.65.
