- Meta’s Muse achieved 2.5 million downloads within 14 days of its September 8 launch, claiming the number one spot on the US iOS free app rankings.
- Major platforms including Shopify, Expedia, and PayPal have integrated with Muse, though Amazon has chosen to restrict access.
- Despite concerns, Mohan maintains a Buy recommendation on Apple with a $370 target price, highlighting the company’s dedicated customer base and privacy credentials.
Apple stock experienced a 2% decline on Tuesday, settling at $332.22, following a Bank of America research note suggesting that artificial intelligence agents pose risks to the tech giant’s high-margin business segments.
Despite maintaining year-to-date gains of 22%, BofA analyst Wamsi Mohan highlights an emerging competitive dynamic that operates independently of the iPhone ecosystem.
The focal point is Meta’s Muse platform. This agentic artificial intelligence application debuted on September 8 and secured 2.5 million downloads within its initial 14-day period.
The Muse application rapidly climbed to the summit of the US iOS free app rankings. Its capabilities include travel reservations, purchase transactions, and task completion through single commands, eliminating the need to launch multiple applications.
According to Mohan, the significance lies in revenue capture. Control over the AI agent translates to control over transactions, representing a fundamental departure from traditional operating system dominance.
“Whomever the agent chooses becomes the merchant, and whoever owns the agent collects the routing economics that previously accrued to operating systems, search, and app stores,” Mohan wrote.
Muse Expands Commerce Integration Network
Muse extends beyond basic chatbot functionality. The platform can launch browsers, populate forms, and continue operations in the background even after users exit the application.
Multiple prominent platforms have established connections with the service. Shopify granted Muse complete access to its product inventory and Shop Pay infrastructure, while Expedia and PayPal joined for reservation and payment processing capabilities.
Amazon represents a notable exception. The e-commerce giant has restricted Muse access entirely, a decision BofA interprets as validation of the competitive threat facing other market participants.
Apple has responded with action. The company deployed its overhauled Siri assistant with iOS 27 on September 14, merely six days following Muse’s market entry, powered by customized Google Gemini models.
Apple’s Current Limitations
Despite recent improvements, Mohan observes that Siri lacks continuous background task execution and a payment infrastructure comparable to Muse’s capabilities. He emphasizes that iPhone hardware specifications exceed Muse’s operational requirements.
The critical challenge concerns development velocity. Apple delivers major software revisions annually, whereas competing AI agents receive near-continuous enhancements.
“Agents are accelerating innovation cycles, and Apple needs to ensure that its teams around services, silicon, payments, privacy etc. are integrating with Siri AI and moving at a pace to match innovation at competitors,” Mohan wrote.
Notwithstanding these concerns, BofA preserved its Buy rating on Apple alongside a $370 price objective. Mohan emphasizes Apple’s substantial, devoted customer base and privacy-focused architecture as competitive differentiators unavailable to Meta.
Market observers will be monitoring whether Shopify, Expedia, and PayPal begin disclosing meaningful transaction metrics through Muse. Such information would clarify whether Apple faces genuine market share erosion or temporary market jitters.
Compounding competitive pressures, OpenAI was anticipated to unveil its own consumer-facing AI agent on the same day this analysis emerged.
