Apple Expands Parental Controls Across Devices
Apple introduced new tools that will help parents manage how children use iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. The company said the features will arrive with software updates this fall. The update builds on Apple’s existing parental controls across its product ecosystem.
The new setup process will guide parents toward creating child accounts with age-based protections. These accounts can limit adult websites, restrict media access, and adjust App Store settings. Also, Apple will support child accounts for users under 13 and children up to 18.
Parents will gain more control over which apps children can access after setup. They can begin with essential apps, curated apps, or selected apps. Then, they can add more apps over time as their child’s needs change.
Ask to Browse and Screen Time Get Major Updates
Apple will expand its approval system through a new feature called Ask to Browse. Parents can require children to seek permission before opening a new Safari website., the feature will work across iPhone, iPad and Mac devices.
The company also updated communication tools for children using Messages, FaceTime and Phone. Parents can approve new contacts before children connect with them. Communication Safety will block detected gore or violent content in shared images and videos.
Screen Time will receive a redesigned interface with clearer usage summaries and faster controls. Parents can review average device use and identify the most used apps. Hence, they can adjust access during meals, school time, outdoor play, or other family moments.
Apple Adds Context for Families and Developers
Apple also introduced Time Allowances for app categories such as games, entertainment, and social media. Parents will receive age-based guidance when setting limits for children. They can still change the settings based on each child’s routine.
The company said it continues to work with child development experts and online safety researchers. Apple also plans to adapt family media guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It launched a dedicated website with resources, tools and answers for parents.
Apple said developers also need tools for age-appropriate app experiences. It offers APIs that help apps manage sensitive content and age ranges. The announcement adds fresh context to Apple’s platform strategy as AAPL shares ended lower.
