ARK Invest, led by Cathie Wood, has intensified its buying activity in both Rocket Lab and Scribe Therapeutics shares during recent market sessions. This strategic positioning reveals the investment firm’s approach of accumulating discounted equities while reducing exposure to established technology giants.
ARK’s September 22 transaction involved acquiring 359,612 shares of Rocket Lab, representing a total investment of $25.13 million.
This substantial purchase was distributed among three distinct ARK exchange-traded funds. The ARK Innovation ETF acquired 277,573 shares. Meanwhile, ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF added 59,746 shares to its holdings. Additionally, ARK Space Exploration ETF purchased 22,293 shares.
Significant Decline in Rocket Lab’s Market Value
Rocket Lab shares settled at $70.31 on September 23. This valuation represents approximately a 53% reduction from the company’s 52-week high of $151.
Multiple headwinds have contributed to the stock’s downturn. The aerospace firm delayed its Neutron rocket inaugural launch schedule. Additionally, management issued gross margin projections that fell short of analyst expectations.
The company’s pending $8 billion acquisition of Iridium, a satellite communications provider, introduces additional concerns regarding financing requirements and potential shareholder dilution.
Rocket Lab arranged a $3.6 billion bridge financing facility to support the transaction. The company simultaneously executed an equity offering that generated approximately $2 billion in proceeds.
ARK’s accumulation strategy extends beyond this single transaction. Earlier in September, the fund acquired 705,102 Rocket Lab shares valued at $44.4 million over two separate trading sessions.
Back in July, ARK purchased 62,497 Rocket Lab shares. Interestingly, during the same period, the fund divested 184,670 Iridium shares—the very company Rocket Lab intends to acquire.
The aerospace manufacturer reported second-quarter revenue growth of 62%, reaching a record $234 million. The company’s order backlog now totals $2.36 billion. Its Electron launch vehicle successfully completed its 96th mission this month.
Reallocation Away from Major Technology Companies
To finance these acquisitions, ARK has been liquidating positions in several prominent technology corporations. The fund offloaded $5.83 million in Alphabet shares on September 22.
Recent weeks have also seen ARK reduce its AMD and Palantir stakes. This capital rotation strategy targets companies the firm considers significantly undervalued.
Concurrently, ARK has maintained steady buying pressure on Scribe Therapeutics, a gene-editing biotechnology firm. Thursday, September 24, saw the ARKG fund add 39,149 shares worth $1,038,622.
These purchases followed even larger transactions from earlier that week. Wednesday’s activity included a 143,257-share acquisition of Scribe Therapeutics exceeding $4 million in value. Tuesday saw ARK purchase 88,323 shares worth approximately $2.5 million.
Beam Therapeutics also attracted ARK’s attention on Wednesday. The fund acquired 65,553 shares valued at roughly $1.7 million.
Conversely, ARK liquidated nearly $7 million of Tempus AI stock on Wednesday. This divestiture signals a strategic retreat from the artificial intelligence healthcare company.
In her most recent communication to investors, Wood characterized the present technological era as one that will “likely to dwarf the Industrial Revolution.” She emphasized ARK’s bullish outlook on artificial intelligence, robotics, energy storage, and genomics sectors.
Wood’s recent portfolio adjustments demonstrate sustained conviction in gene editing and space technology enterprises, despite reducing allocations to certain large-cap technology holdings.
