AT&T (NYSE: T) shares moved higher on Wednesday after the telecommunications giant delivered second-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street expectations in several key operating metrics, reinforcing investor confidence in its cash generation and shareholder return strategy.
The stock finished the session at $23.04, gaining 3.5% on the day and extending its five-day advance to approximately 7.5%. The rally followed stronger-than-expected subscriber additions, higher earnings, and better free cash flow, prompting management to accelerate its share repurchase program.
While total revenue came in slightly below analyst expectations, investors appeared to focus on the company’s ability to continue expanding its wireless and broadband businesses while producing enough cash to fund both dividends and an expanded buyback plan.
Subscriber Growth Drives Momentum
AT&T’s wireless business delivered one of the quarter’s strongest performances. The company reported 432,000 postpaid phone net additions, comfortably surpassing analyst estimates of roughly 338,500. The result represented a meaningful upside surprise and suggested customer demand remained resilient despite intense competition across the U.S. telecommunications industry.
The company also continued expanding its broadband footprint. During the quarter, AT&T added 367,000 fiber customers while gaining another 279,000 fixed wireless subscribers, reinforcing its strategy of combining wireless and broadband services to deepen customer relationships.
Management noted that approximately 42.5% of households using its advanced internet offerings also subscribe to AT&T wireless services, highlighting growing adoption of bundled services. Although the company indicated this figure may be revised, the trend suggests its cross-selling initiatives are gaining traction.
The broader operational performance also reflected improvements in newer connectivity services. Revenue from Advanced Connectivity products increased while operating margins expanded significantly, helping offset continued declines in legacy business segments.
Cash Flow Supports Shareholder Returns
One of the biggest catalysts behind the stock’s rally was AT&T’s continued confidence in its cash generation.
The company reaffirmed its expectation of generating at least $18 billion in free cash flow during 2026, while maintaining planned capital expenditures between $23 billion and $24 billion.
Strong cash generation encouraged management to increase its planned share repurchases for the year to approximately $10 billion, signaling confidence that the business can continue rewarding shareholders without compromising investment in network expansion.
Chief Executive Officer John Stankey said the decision to accelerate buybacks reflects management’s confidence in AT&T’s competitive position and long-term financial outlook.
During the first half of the year, AT&T repurchased approximately 174 million shares for roughly $4.4 billion, implying an average purchase price above the stock’s latest closing level. With billions of dollars still authorized for buybacks during the second half, investors see additional support for earnings per share if the company continues purchasing stock at current prices.
Combined with the company’s annual dividend, AT&T remains positioned to return a substantial portion of its projected free cash flow directly to shareholders.
Earnings Beat Despite Revenue Miss
Although revenue slightly missed Wall Street expectations, the company’s profitability and cash generation more than compensated for the shortfall.
Adjusted earnings per share reached $0.65, exceeding consensus estimates of $0.59, while quarterly free cash flow also came in above forecasts.
Revenue totaled $31.56 billion, modestly below analyst expectations, but investors largely overlooked the miss given the strength of the underlying operating metrics.
The improved earnings profile reflected stronger execution across higher-margin connectivity services rather than broad-based top-line expansion. Operating income within the Advanced Connectivity segment posted healthy growth, while margins widened considerably during the quarter.
These improvements suggest AT&T continues shifting its business mix toward faster-growing and more profitable services as older legacy operations gradually decline.
Industry Competition Remains Key
Despite the encouraging quarter, investors remain focused on whether AT&T’s subscriber momentum reflects company-specific execution or broader industry trends.
Attention now shifts to upcoming quarterly reports from major rivals T-Mobile US and Verizon Communications, whose subscriber additions and financial results will provide additional insight into the competitive landscape.
If competitors report similarly strong customer growth, it may indicate resilient demand across the U.S. wireless market. However, if AT&T significantly outperforms its peers, investors could view the results as evidence that its network investments and bundled service strategy are translating into market share gains.
At the same time, challenges remain. AT&T continues carrying a sizeable debt load, and higher interest expenses could weigh on future financial flexibility. The company also faces ongoing costs associated with maintaining and eventually retiring portions of its legacy copper network, while regulatory developments could influence the timing of those transitions.
Even so, the latest quarter strengthened the investment case for AT&T by demonstrating that steady subscriber growth, expanding broadband adoption, and robust free cash flow can continue supporting both capital investment and generous shareholder returns. With an accelerated buyback program now underway and customer metrics exceeding expectations, investors will be watching closely to see whether the company can sustain this momentum through the remainder of 2026.
