Macy’s approaches its upcoming quarterly financial disclosure with heightened market scrutiny. The catalyst? Berkshire Hathaway’s unexpected move to establish a position in the legacy department store operator has reignited investor curiosity. Market watchers are preparing for the company’s pre-market announcement on Wednesday, May 27.
Wall Street consensus points to earnings per share of $0.02 for the period. Sales projections settle around $4.61 billion.
These forecasts represent a significant step down from the prior reporting period. During Q4, Macy’s surpassed analyst predictions by delivering $1.67 per share versus the anticipated $1.55, while revenue reached $7.92 billion compared to the $7.48 billion consensus.
However, that performance still reflected a 1.7% revenue contraction compared to the equivalent quarter twelve months earlier. Earnings also showed pressure, dropping from $1.80 per share in the year-ago period.
Looking at the complete fiscal year, Wall Street projects Macy’s will deliver $2.00 in earnings per share.
Buffett’s Investment Arm Takes Position
The primary catalyst driving recent attention toward Macy’s centers on Berkshire Hathaway revealing a newly established stake. The regulatory filing immediately captured market attention, with industry observers speculating that the company’s valuable real estate portfolio and premium Bloomingdale’s division likely influenced the decision.
Shares have demonstrated relative strength versus broader market indices following the Berkshire disclosure. This momentum has improved investor sentiment, despite continued reservation from sell-side analysts.
The stock launched Wednesday’s session at $19.10, positioned above its 50-day moving average of $18.63. Over the past year, the stock has oscillated between $10.54 and $24.41.

JPMorgan Chase lowered its projection from $24 down to $21 while maintaining a neutral stance. TD Cowen adjusted its target from $21 to $20, also sustaining a hold recommendation. UBS maintains a sell rating with a $9 price objective.
Zacks Research upgraded Macy’s from “strong sell” to “hold” in April. Among the 14 analysts tracking the stock, one recommends buying, eleven suggest holding, and two advise selling.
The company also announced a quarterly distribution of $0.1915 per share, scheduled for July 1 disbursement. This represents an annualized dividend of $0.77, translating to approximately a 4% yield.
Institutional Accumulation Accelerates
