Shares of Boeing (BA) experienced a 1.26% uptick during Monday’s premarket session, reaching $216.74, following a trio of significant aircraft purchase announcements at the Farnborough Air Show that energized investor sentiment.
The Philippine flag carrier confirmed its commitment to acquire up to 20 wide-body 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The agreement includes 15 confirmed orders for the 787-10 model along with five additional options. This purchase aligns with the airline’s strategic fleet modernization initiative.
Dublin-headquartered aircraft leasing giant SMBC Aviation Capital announced a substantial order covering 100 narrow-body 737 MAX aircraftācomprising 60 units of the 737-10 configuration and 40 of the 737-8 model. This marks SMBC’s inaugural purchase of the 737 MAX 10 variant, expanding their total 737 MAX fleet commitment to 450 planes.
Notably, SMBC also secured 100 A320neo family aircraft from Airbus during the same industry event, demonstrating a balanced procurement strategy between both major manufacturers.
Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Air activated purchase options for an additional 28 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with 20 of these being upgraded to the extended-range 787-10 configuration. Additionally, Boeing disclosed a previously confidential commitment for 11 Dreamliners, which will elevate the airline’s total confirmed 787 orders to 67 aircraft once the final 17 units are officially documented.
Stephanie Pope, who leads Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes division, commented that the SMBC agreement “reflects the strong demand we are seeing for the 737 MAX family’s efficiency, reliability and versatility.”
Institutional Investment Activity Increases
Beyond the aircraft order announcements, Boeing has been attracting considerable institutional capital. Sound Shore Management established a fresh position valued at $70.66 million during the first quarter, acquiring 355,009 shares. The aerospace manufacturer now represents 2.4% of the investment firm’s total portfolio.
Additional major institutional players have been expanding their Boeing exposure. Vanguard increased its holdings by 5.1% in the fourth quarter, while Janus Henderson expanded its stake by 43.1%, and Viking Global boosted its position by 31.3%. Collectively, institutional investors and hedge funds currently control 64.82% of Boeing’s outstanding shares.
Company director Bradley D. Tilden also demonstrated confidence by purchasing 1,370 shares at $218.50 per share during May, totaling $299,345 in value.
Upcoming Quarterly Results
Boeing is scheduled to release its second-quarter financial results on July 28. Analyst consensus projects a per-share loss of $0.27 on revenues totaling $23.90 billion. These figures would represent substantial improvement compared to the prior year’s second quarter loss of $1.24 per share, while revenue would increase from $22.75 billion year-over-year.
The aerospace giant currently holds a “Moderate Buy” consensus rating among analysts, with an average price objective of $261.53. Tigress Financial maintains the most optimistic Street target at $295, while Morgan Stanley assigns an equal-weight rating accompanied by a $250 target.
Examining the technical picture, Boeing’s stock is currently positioned beneath all major moving average indicators. The shares trade 1.9% below the 20-day simple moving average, 2.7% under the 50-day, and 1.6% beneath the 100-day. Critical resistance is identified at $232, while support is established around $214.
Boeing commenced Monday’s trading session at $214.38, operating within a 52-week trading range spanning from $176.77 to $254.35.
