Shares of CAVA Group advanced 3% during Wednesday’s morning trading session after Morgan Stanley elevated its rating to overweight while boosting the price objective to $90 from the previous $86.
The Mediterranean fast-casual chain had settled at $69.97 on Tuesday, after experiencing recent pressure tied to weaker credit card spending data. This temporary weakness appears to have created the opportunity Morgan Stanley seized upon.
Brian Harbour, the firm’s analyst covering the name, explained that the recent decline triggered the rating change. “We don’t have concerns about longer-term fundamentals and have long had a positive bias towards the story,” according to his research note.
Harbour identified CAVA as among the rare expansion-focused concepts in the restaurant space where critical metrics are trending favorably ā customer traffic acceleration, restaurant footprint expansion, new location performance, and profit margin predictability all align positively.
Regarding valuation, Harbour conceded the shares aren’t trading at a discount, even following the recent correction. However, he defended the elevated multiple: “Valuation is defensible, because it remains one of the strongest fundamental stories in restaurants.”
The $90 price objective derives from enterprise value-to-EBITDA multiples, reinforced by discounted cash flow modeling.
