- Critical price floor established at $90, while bullish traders must push above $95 and subsequently $100 to reverse current trends
Shares of Circle Internet Group (CRCL) settled at $90.60 on Friday’s close, posting a modest 0.31% daily gain while surrendering 7.53% over the five-day trading period. The stock oscillated between $90.14 and $95.80 throughout Friday’s trading hours, encountering resistance near session peaks.
While the weekly performance showed weakness, CRCL has delivered impressive returns exceeding 26% across the monthly period.
The financial technology firm revealed its acquisition of Singapore-headquartered Tazapay in a $400 million transaction. This strategic move seeks to broaden USDC’s footprint throughout developing economies, territories where competitor Tether’s USDT maintains dominant market share.
The Tazapay acquisition delivers critical infrastructure Circle previously lacked across numerous territories: regulatory approvals, established banking partnerships, and localized payment systems essential for practical stablecoin adoption.
“Stablecoin settlement is becoming core infrastructure for global commerce, but for USDC to be useful everywhere money moves, it has to connect to local money in local currency, on local rails, through banking relationships that take years to build,” said Irfan Ganchi, Circle’s SVP of Payments.
The acquisition target operates payment distribution channels across over 100 territories, supported by banking and financial technology partnerships throughout Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American markets.
The Strategic Importance of Developing Market Expansion
As the world’s second-largest stablecoin commanding approximately $74 billion in total circulation, USDC has maintained primary concentration within developed economies. Meanwhile, Tether’s USDT commands dominant positions throughout Asian and Latin American territories.
“This is the latest signal that stablecoins’ next battleground is in emerging markets,” said Martins Benkitis, co-founder and CEO of Gravity Team.
The transaction addresses a significant limitation within Circle’s current Circle Payments Network (CPN) infrastructure. While CPN processes transactions through blockchain technology, it lacks necessary local regulatory permissions required across numerous jurisdictions. Tazapay brings capabilities for handling these compliance requirements, including customer verification processes and localized payment distribution.
“After the acquisition, Circle vertically integrates the last-mile operator, which can help support volume growth of CPN,” said Owen Lau, managing director at Clear Street.
Federal Reserve Policy Decision Looms Large
Separate from the acquisition announcement, macroeconomic headwinds are creating pressure on CRCL. Trading data reflects an 86% probability for a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate increase during the upcoming September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee gathering, following August’s core inflation measurement of 0.3%, surpassing the anticipated 0.2% figure.
An interest rate elevation could benefit Circle’s reserve-based revenue streams. During the second quarter, the company generated $668 million from reserve holdings, representing 95.2% of total quarterly revenues. Average USDC in circulation increased 25.2% during this timeframe, although a 66 basis point reduction in yields partially counterbalanced this expansion.
From a technical analysis perspective, the $90 price point now represents crucial support after Friday’s intraday bottom at $90.14. A breakdown beneath this threshold could expose the $87.14 level. For bullish sentiment to regain control, traders need to push prices beyond $95, followed by the psychologically significant $100 mark.
Consistent purchasing pressure above $100 would potentially unlock upside targets at $103-$105, with further extension toward $107 and $110. Upcoming catalysts include Wednesday’s Federal Reserve policy announcement, Tuesday’s Senate vote on the CLARITY Act, and broader cryptocurrency market dynamics.
