Shares of Coinbase experienced a significant rally Tuesday, climbing as much as 12.3% during morning sessions to touch $180.23, compared to the previous session’s closing price of $160.43. The stock reached $176.75 intraday before extending gains further.
Volume remained below typical levels at approximately 2.6 million shares compared to the 10.5 million average ā indicating the price movement reflected strong investor conviction rather than speculative churning.
The rally was propelled by two significant developments. The CLARITY Act ā officially titled the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act ā is advancing toward a Senate floor vote ahead of the August congressional recess. Reports indicate President Trump has personally engaged with senators to secure sufficient support for passage.
Should the legislation become law, it would establish the most extensive federal digital asset regulatory structure among major global economies, defining regulatory jurisdictions and establishing formal requirements for exchange registration and asset custody that align with Coinbase’s operational framework.
Base Network Enters Tokenized Securities Arena
The second driver centers on product innovation. Base, Coinbase‘s Layer 2 blockchain platform, announced that its launch of 1:1-backed tokenized stock offerings is “imminent.” The tokenized securities sector has expanded fourfold over the past year, reaching $1.7 billion in market value. This initiative positions Coinbase as a direct competitor to Robinhood, whose blockchain platform has already deployed tokenized stock products. HOOD shares also gained approximately 7.9% during the session.
This strategic move diversifies Coinbase’s revenue streams beyond traditional spot cryptocurrency trading into an emerging product category experiencing substantial growth.
Quarterly Results on the Horizon
Coinbase is scheduled to announce Q2 2026 financial results on July 30 following market close. Analyst consensus forecasts point to substantial EPS improvement compared to the prior year period, and market participants appear to be establishing positions ahead of the announcement.
The previous quarterly report delivered disappointing results. During Q1, Coinbase recorded a loss of $1.49 per share, significantly missing the $0.06 consensus forecast. Revenue totaled $1.41 billion against expectations of $1.49 billion ā representing a 30.5% year-over-year decline.
This creates an intriguing dynamic heading into the July 30 release. Expectations are tempered following Q1’s underperformance, while the macroeconomic environment has evolved favorably.
Broader equity markets contributed to the positive sentiment, with the S&P 500 advancing 0.87% and the Nasdaq gaining 1.31% during the session.
Wall Street analysts remain divided on COIN. Barclays maintains a $99 price objective with an underweight stance. Piper Sandler reduced their target to $155 with a neutral rating earlier this month. Conversely, Deutsche Bank holds a buy recommendation with a $208 target. Jefferies increased its price objective to $181 while maintaining a hold rating.
The consensus analyst price target stands at $245.39 based on 33 analysts ā comprising 18 buy ratings, 12 hold ratings, and 3 sell ratings.
Despite Tuesday’s advance, COIN remains substantially below its 52-week high of $420.98, currently trading at approximately 43% of that peak level.
Corporate insider transactions have tilted toward selling in recent months. Insiders disposed of 30,627 shares during the past 90 days, valued at roughly $5.3 million, all executed through pre-established 10b5-1 trading arrangements.
Institutional investors and hedge funds collectively control 68.84% of outstanding shares. Recent institutional purchasers include Mizuho Markets Cayman and Axxcess Wealth Management.
