Investment management giant Fidelity has submitted a regulatory filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission requesting permission to incorporate staking functionality within its Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH). The exchange-traded fund currently manages more than $898 million in net assets.
According to the filing details, the fund would stake the majority of its Ethereum holdings during standard market conditions. Three institutional custodians—Anchorage Digital Bank, BitGo, and Fidelity Digital Assets—would be responsible for managing staking infrastructure and operations.
The proposed economic structure allocates 85% of gross staking income to the fund itself. The remaining 15% would compensate sponsors, custodial services, and validator node operators for their contributions.
After receiving net staking proceeds, the fund would apply these rewards toward operational expenses first. Any surplus income would subsequently be distributed to shareholders on a quarterly basis in cash form, adhering to guidelines established by IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-31.
EIP-8363 Sparks Heated Community Debate
This regulatory submission coincides with an ongoing controversy within the Ethereum ecosystem surrounding EIP-8363. The Ethereum Improvement Proposal would implement a gradual reduction of staking rewards, eventually reaching zero when network staking participation exceeds the 50% threshold.
Proponents of the measure contend it would curtail ETH token inflation and strengthen overall network security architecture. Opponents counter that such changes could undermine decentralized finance protocols and diminish Ethereum’s attractiveness to institutional investors seeking yield-generating assets.
The total quantity of staked ETH has experienced consistent growth throughout January, reaching 41.81 million ETH during the current week. An additional 2.33 million ETH currently sits in the validator entry queue awaiting activation.
Ethereum-focused exchange-traded funds recorded combined net outflows totaling $16.3 million during the previous two trading sessions, following the prior week’s substantial inflows of $244.9 million. Aggregate net assets across all Ethereum ETF products currently stand at $10.48 billion.
Market analyst Michaël van de Poppe, recognized on X as @CryptoMichNL, expressed confidence that ETH appears positioned for an imminent breakout. He highlighted compressed price action and a series of ascending lows as technical indicators suggesting substantial upward volatility ahead, establishing an initial price objective of $2,300.
Institutional Accumulation Emerges at $1,850 Support
Bitmine, the Ethereum treasury corporation helmed by Tom Lee, executed a substantial purchase of 7,391 ETH valued at roughly $14 million during Tuesday’s price decline approaching the $1,850 level.
Lee observed that market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate increase in September have declined significantly from 70% to 46%. He suggested that improving monetary conditions could provide favorable momentum for cryptocurrency markets.
Technical chart analysis reveals Ethereum maintaining support above both its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, positioned at $1,884 and $1,864 respectively. The 100-day exponential moving average at $1,922 represents the primary resistance barrier.

A classic bullish flag continuation pattern has developed on the charts beginning in mid-July. A decisive breakthrough above the $1,950 level could propel ETH toward the $2,150 zone, with extended upside potential reaching $2,500.
Derivatives markets experienced $32.3 million in total liquidations during the preceding 24-hour period, with short position liquidations accounting for $23.4 million of that volume.
