Key Highlights
- Gold surged past $4,130 per ounce during Wednesday trading, gaining 1.3% in a single session
- Escalating conflict in the Middle East, including American military action against Iran and Red Sea shipping disruptions, is boosting investor appetite
- Crude oil prices broke through the $90 per barrel threshold, intensifying concerns about inflationary pressures before the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting
- The central bank is anticipated to maintain current interest rates while potentially adopting a more hawkish tone on future policy
- Other precious metals like silver and platinum posted substantial gains, with silver jumping more than 4% in the previous trading session
The yellow metal is currently changing hands above $4,130 per ounce as heightened geopolitical instability in the Middle East compels market participants to seek refuge in traditional safe-haven instruments, despite continued strength in both the greenback and government bond yields.

Geopolitical Turmoil Sparks Energy Market Concerns and Inflation Worries
Futures contracts for gold advanced 1.5% to reach $4,137 during Wednesday’s session. This upward movement followed an almost 2% surge in the prior trading day, marking the metal’s most impressive weekly performance in more than three months.
Military operations occurring near strategically important shipping corridors, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea waterways, continue to rattle energy sector participants. Notably, three Saudi Arabian crude oil tankers reversed course in the Red Sea following announcements by Houthi militants of a maritime blockade.
As a consequence, oil prices have climbed beyond the $90 per barrel mark. This development maintains upward pressure on inflation metrics and creates additional challenges for Federal Reserve policymakers.
President Donald Trump issued threats to target Iranian atomic energy installations. Iran’s leadership responded by warning that such actions would trigger broader regional confrontation.
While Trump indicated Washington’s willingness to engage in diplomatic negotiations with Tehran, American military forces simultaneously conducted their eleventh consecutive night of aerial bombardment operations.
Upcoming Federal Reserve Decision Creates Additional Market Volatility
The Federal Open Market Committee convenes next week for its scheduled policy meeting. Market consensus anticipates that benchmark interest rates will remain unchanged, though investors are closely monitoring for any indication that elevated rates might persist longer should energy-related inflation prove persistent.
Conventional wisdom suggests that increased interest rates typically create headwinds for gold investments, given the metal generates no income yield. However, gold’s resilience in the current environment indicates that safe-haven demand is sufficiently robust to counteract this traditional pressure.
According to Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG, the fact that gold is maintaining strength despite dollar appreciation and climbing yields demonstrates that investors are reasserting the metal’s defensive characteristics. He noted that improved retail positioning dynamics may be providing additional support.
Sycamore identified preliminary indications of a technical floor forming around the late-June trough of $3,942. A breakthrough above the early-July peak of $4,202 could potentially unlock a path toward the 200-day moving average positioned near $4,494.
IG maintains a moderately optimistic outlook provided gold continues trading above that late-June support threshold.
Broader Precious Metals Complex Participates in Rally
Silver prices advanced 1.5% to $59.71 per ounce during Wednesday’s session, building upon a 4% appreciation recorded the previous day. Platinum climbed 2.3% to settle at $1,666.59.
From a technical perspective, gold confronts immediate resistance around the $4,140 level, with a secondary barrier positioned at $4,200. These price zones represent the next significant challenges for bullish market participants.
Downside support is established around $4,020, with year-to-date lows situated near $3,950 providing a deeper safety net.
The precious metal has accumulated approximately 2.5% in gains throughout the current week, with geopolitical risk factors remaining the predominant catalyst.
