Cryptocurrency trading platform Kraken has unveiled an innovative offering allowing qualified customers to generate passive income on tokenized equities and exchange-traded funds through decentralized finance infrastructure.
The digital asset exchange rolled out three distinct xStocks vault options on September 14, 2026. Participants can stake tokenized representations of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, Invesco QQQ ETF, and Nvidia corporation shares to accumulate yields.
Vault Mechanics Explained
When a participant stakes an xStock token, Kraken transfers the asset into an embedded custody wallet operating on Ink, the company’s Ethereum layer-2 blockchain solution. The token subsequently bridges across blockchain networks to Solana, where it enters Kamino’s lending marketplace as collateral backing a stablecoin borrowing position.
The acquired stablecoins are subsequently allocated into various DeFi yield-generating mechanisms. Profits generated through these strategies are reconverted to the initial xStock denomination and automatically credited to the participant’s vault holding.
Infrastructure for the vault system comes from Veda, while Sentora handles the design and operational management of the lending methodology. Kraken emphasizes it maintains no direct management role over the strategy execution or underlying protocol governance.
Projected net annual returns stand at 2% for both the SPY and QQQ vault options, with the Nvidia vault offering 1.8%. These percentages fluctuate based on stablecoin borrowing market conditions over the preceding seven-day period.
A 25% performance fee is collected by Kraken, though this charge is pre-calculated and already reflected in the published APY figures. Users face zero deposit fees, zero withdrawal fees, and zero transaction costs on the Ink blockchain network.
Risk Factors and Geographic Limitations
The vault architecture employs a leveraged financial model. Deposited tokens serve as loan collateral for stablecoin borrowing, creating exposure to liquidation scenarios during significant price downturns.
Any losses stemming from liquidation events or uncollectible debt are distributed proportionally across all participants within the impacted vault. Kraken explicitly cautions that customers face potential partial or complete loss of deposited funds, with neither principal amounts nor accrued rewards carrying insurance protection.
Additional vulnerability points include smart contract coding errors, stablecoin value deviations from peg, and cross-chain asset transfer complications. The operational workflow routes assets through multiple protocol layers before yield generation occurs.
Withdrawal requests are processed on-demand but require a three-day completion timeline. During volatile market conditions, processing intervals may extend beyond standard timeframes.
Holding xStocks confers no equity ownership benefits, including shareholder voting privileges or dividend distributions. Kraken recommends users consult qualified tax professionals regarding jurisdiction-specific reporting obligations.
Vault access is limited to European Economic Area residents and select additional territories. Citizens and residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and United Arab Emirates cannot participate.
The xStocks vault product shares underlying technology with Kraken DeFi Earn, which debuted in January and has accumulated over $800 million in total user deposits.
Industry-wide tokenized stock and ETF market capitalization has expanded to approximately $2.84 billion, representing significant growth from roughly $540 million recorded twelve months prior, per RWA.xyz tracking data.
Kraken has separately disclosed its intention to acquire Backed Finance, the entity responsible for issuing xStocks tokens, and is collaborating with Nasdaq on blockchain-enabled securities market infrastructure development.
