Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), has indicated that Macau may experience roughly 10% year-over-year visitor growth during the upcoming summer months. The projection builds on the territory’s impressive performance during the opening months of 2026.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Service, the special administrative region attracted just under 14.66 million tourists between January and April 2026. This figure marks a 13.1% uptick when measured against the corresponding timeframe in 2025.
The mainland Chinese market remains the cornerstone of Macau’s tourism industry. Visitor numbers from across the border climbed 15.7% on an annual basis, reinforcing the mainland’s status as the territory’s primary source of tourism revenue and foot traffic.
Remarkable Performance from Thai Market
Among the most notable developments was the exceptional performance of the Thai market. During the first third of 2026, Thailand delivered 88,819 visitors to Macau, representing an impressive surge of approximately 60% compared to the previous year’s figures.
The MGTO has been implementing targeted initiatives to expand its appeal throughout Southeast Asia. A central component of this approach involves developing and marketing itineraries that combine Macau with other destinations throughout the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
Early indicators suggest this approach is yielding results. By positioning Macau as an integrated component of a larger regional tourism network, authorities are successfully attracting visitors who might otherwise bypass the territory in favour of single-destination trips.
Diversified International Visitor Base
The positive trends extended well beyond mainland China and Thailand. During the January-April window, Macau recorded 1.01 million arrivals from international markets beyond Greater China, reflecting a 10.7% increase over the comparable 2025 period.
South Korea maintained its position as the second-largest international source market, delivering 225,541 visitors—a 7.7% year-on-year gain. The Philippines occupied third place with 183,293 arrivals, marking an 8.0% increase.
This distribution of growth across multiple geographic markets suggests Macau is successfully building a more balanced and resilient tourism portfolio heading into the peak summer travel window.
The MGTO’s forecast of approximately 10% summer growth stems from confidence that the patterns established during the year’s opening months will persist through the high season. While officials haven’t attributed the optimism to any specific driver, they’ve noted that sustained momentum across priority markets underpins their expectations.
Summer traditionally represents a high-water mark for Asian tourism, with school holidays and favourable weather driving increased travel activity. Macau has consistently benefited from these seasonal patterns, recording elevated visitor numbers during the warmest months.
Achieving the projected 10% increase will hinge on several variables, particularly sustained demand from mainland China and the continuation of strong interest from Southeast Asian nations such as Thailand.
Based on the data released to date, Macau appears well-positioned entering the summer season, with arrivals already running ahead of last year’s pace across the majority of its core markets.
