Nvidia shares experienced a powerful 8.7% rally on Thursday following the release of extraordinary quarterly results and forward guidance that exceeded Wall Street’s most optimistic projections. Trading commenced Friday at $227.98 per share.
The chipmaker delivered second-quarter earnings per share of $2.22, outpacing the Street consensus of $2.09. Quarterly revenue reached $96.22 billion, marking a 105.9% year-over-year climb and exceeding analyst projections of $92.27 billion.
However, the true catalyst for the stock’s surge was the company’s forward-looking guidance. Nvidia projected approximately 70% revenue growth for its next fiscal year, substantially surpassing the 45% expansion rate that Wall Street analysts had anticipated.
Bloomberg Intelligence characterized the forecast as “jaw-dropping,” estimating it suggests potential upside exceeding $100 billion compared to current consensus estimates.
JPMorgan analysts suggested the company’s outlook may actually be understated. The investment bank highlighted that Nvidia “explicitly characterized the outlook as supply-constrained, with unconstrained demand pacing materially higher.”
Historic Single-Session Market Value Increase
The 8.7% stock price appreciation contributed $442 billion to Nvidia’s total market capitalization within a single trading day. This positions the gain as the second-largest one-day market value increase ever recorded, falling just short of Microsoft’s $450 billion jump achieved less than a month prior.
Nvidia previously claimed that distinction, having added $440 billion in market value following President Trump’s announcement of a 90-day tariff suspension in April of last year.
The company also maintains the dubious honor of recording the largest single-day market capitalization decline, when approximately $600 billion in value evaporated amid investor concerns regarding China’s DeepSeek AI model.
Nvidia currently stands as the world’s most valuable company, commanding a market capitalization of roughly $5.52 trillion.
Wall Street Price Targets and Ownership Structure
Sanford C. Bernstein elevated its price objective on Nvidia from $315 to $400 in response to the quarterly results, reaffirming an “outperform” designation. Truist Financial increased its target from $307 to $346 while maintaining a “buy” rating.
Overall analyst sentiment remains positive, with 48 analysts assigning a Buy rating, two recommending Strong Buy, and four maintaining Hold positions. The consensus price target stands at $322.61.
Institutional shareholders control 65.27% of Nvidia’s outstanding shares. State Street Corp maintains a position exceeding 991 million shares valued at approximately $184.9 billion. Geode Capital Management owns more than 588 million shares worth roughly $109.4 billion.
Regarding insider transactions, company directors have divested a combined 1.9 million shares valued at approximately $410 million during the previous 90-day period.
The corporation’s board has greenlit an $80 billion share repurchase authorization. Nvidia has also announced a quarterly dividend distribution of $0.25 per share, scheduled for payment on October 1 to shareholders registered as of September 10.
The stock’s 52-week trading range spans from $164.07 to $236.54, with its 50-day moving average positioned at $207.95 and its 200-day moving average at $200.66.
